Letter to Applicants from the Training Directors

Peter N. Barboriak, M.D., Ph.D.
Director, Forensic Psychiatry Residency Program

Alyson Kuroski-Mazzei, D.O.

Associate Director, Forensic Psychiatry Residency Program

Dear Applicant,

Thank you for your interest in the UNC Forensic Psychiatry Residency Program.

Briefly, our program, which is ACGME-accredited for two positions, consists of clinical rotations on the pretrial evaluation unit (currently at Dorothea Dix Hospital). We expect to move to the newly constructed Central Regional Hospital in Butner, NC, prior to July 2009. Residents also rotate to the mental health unit at Central Prison in Raleigh, the Mental Health Service at the Federal Medical Center in Butner, as well as the Forensic Psychiatry Program and Clinic (civil cases and others) and the Forensic Team (child and adolescent civil cases), both at UNC in Chapel Hill.

Didactics consist of a forensic difficult case conference, a forensic seminar, and a landmark case seminar.

Our associate training director and recruitment coordinator is Alyson Kuroski-Mazzei, D.O., and our residency administrator is Tana Hartman, M.A..

We would be happy to consider your application. International medical graduates should be aware that the Federal Medical Center requires that forensic psychiatry residents possess either United States citizenship or Permanent Resident Status. We recommend that you review the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law (AAPL) application guidelines, which may be found on their web site at http://www.aapl.org/pdf/Applicant_Guidelines.5-22-05.pdf. (These guidelines are less relevant after October.)

Should you decide to apply, please download and complete the UNC Hospitals Application for Appointment to House Staff as soon as possible.  That document, along with information on salaries and benefits, may be found at http://gme.unchealthcare.org. Click on the "Applying Residents" button in the left-most column.

In addition to the Application for Appointment to House Staff, Forensic Psychiatry applicants should submit the following:

1) Curriculum Vitae;

2) Personal Statement;

3) Dean's Letter;

4) Official Medical School Transcripts;

5) Official USMLE Transcripts;

6) ECFMG Status Reports for all International Medical Graduates (Again, please remember we may accept the J-1 visa but we do not apply for the visa on behalf of an applicant);

7) Three (3) Letters of Recommendation from medical professionals (not residents) with whom you have worked -- letters should be addressed to the Training Director and sent to the Psychiatry Education Office at the address given below;

8) Letters from Training Directors of all current and previous residency programs.

Please send all application materials to:
