Dr. Gilmore and Dr. Belger review brain scans to identify abnormalities associated with schizophrenia.

The Department of Psychiatry has a long tradition of psychiatric research emphasizing basic and clinical neuroscientific approaches. The goals of this research are to elucidate the causes and neurobiologic bases of mental disorders, therapeutic targets for drug development and to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of treatments. This research program utilizes a broad array of research disciplines including molecular neurobiology and pharmacology, behavioral and systems pharmacology, neurogenetics, epidemiologic genetics, structural spectroscopic and functional neuroimaging, electrophysiology, neuropsychology, descriptive phenomenology, clinical neurobiology, experimental therapeutics and interventions and services research.

The major areas of research emphasis include schizophrenia and related psychotic disorders, neurodevelopmental disorders (including autism, fragile X syndrome, Turner’s syndrome), bipolar and depressive mood disorders, child and adolescent psychiatric disorders (psychotic, mood, cognitive), women’s health and behavioral medicine and eating disorders. This research is carried out by a multidisciplinary faculty and is supported by funding from the NIH institutes, foundations, the pharmaceutical industry and private philanthropy. The research priorities of the department are determined by areas of scientific opportunity, public health importance and individual faculty and institutional interests. A special effort is made to make the results of research transferable to clinical practice and to address the mental health needs of the citizens of North Carolina and the United States.
