The following list of websites is intended to be a conduit for your specific interests relative to schizophrenia and related disorders. Although this is not an exhaustive list, issues of education, treatment, advocacy, research, discussion boards, resources and legal matters are readily available and accessed through the following websites. Please note that designated categories for each website suggest a primary focus, although most sites offer multiple focuses.

Advocacy


http://www.ncmentalhealthvote.org/ - This is a non-partisan website whose aim is to educate politicians and voters about mental health issues in North Carolina.

http://www.bazelon.org/ - This web resource offers comprehensive information on the laws that protect the rights of individuals with mental illness. Helpful links describe the rights of individuals specific to life domains that affect quality of life for all persons with mental illness.

http://www.psychlaws.org/ - This website is hosted by the Treatment Advocacy Center. The TAC website explains issues relative to policy and practice in the arena of mental health. Also includes medical resources and legal information specific to each state.

http://www.disabilityrightsnc.org/ - Designated by the NC Governor in 2007 to ensure the rights of all state citizens with disabilities through individual advocacy and system change, Disability Rights NC is part of a national system of federally mandated independent disability agencies.

http://www.eeoc.gov/ - The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission website exists to extend information regarding issues relevant to fair practices in the work place.


Education

The site offers education, practical knowledge and discussion boards as well as basic and scholarly information. Also available includes access to a free newsletter, current news relating to schizophrenia and book reviews.

http://www.nami.org/ - National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI), Colonial Place Three, 2107 Wilson Blvd., Suite 300, Arlington, VA 22201, 1-800-950-6264. This organization is a non-profit support and advocacy organization comprised of consumers, friends, and family members of persons with mental illness. Their website is dedicated to improving the quality of life for those affected by mental illness. It targets education, support and action as the primary resource links.

http://medlineplus.gov/ - Search keyword schizophrenia in the National Library of Medicine and access a comprehensive overview of the issues affecting the field of schizophrenia from basic education to coping strategies and research.

http://www.schizophreniadigest.com/ - Schizophrenia Digest is a printed, quarterly magazine founded by a man with schizophrenia. The magazine exposes and explores recent developments in the field. This web page offers resources that complement information presented in the magazine.

http://mentalhelp.net/poc/center_index.php?id=7&cn=7 - MentalHelp.net is a site directed toward family and friends but is a useful resource for anyone interested in learning more about schizophrenia.

http://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/topics/index.shtml - The National Institute of Mental Health has designated this website to address specific issues related to schizophrenia. The website offers a selection of resources related to education and treatment. In addition, links are offered to schizophrenia research, journal articles, press releases and other resources.


Early Intervention and Prevention

 

http://www.eppic.org.au/ - Based in Australia, this web resource is intended for caregivers and emphasizes early intervention during early stages of psychosis. This site offers free access to a newsletter, information on research studies, supplemental resources and a link to the International Early Psychosis Association.


Research


http://www.narsad.org - This website is intended for individuals interested in the research of psychiatric brain disorders. The National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression is the single biggest contributor to the research of psychiatric brain disorders. The website focuses on education and research that is funded through NARSAD.
