Welcome to the Psychiatry Clerkship

We are very much looking forward to your rotation with us. Below is a brief introduction the clerkship. To best navigate this website, click on the tabs on the lefthand side of this page. The Overview tab will give you access to addtional, necessary information for the clerkship.

Introduction

The Psychiatry Clerkship is designed to enhance the clinical knowledge base and skills essential to becoming a competent and well-rounded physician. With learning objectives based on the UNC SOM Core Competencies, the rotation provides each student with a mix of inpatient, outpatient and emergency clinical encounters. Other educational activities include the seminar series for all students, site-based supplemental conferences, and the expectation for independent study. While the amount of psychiatric knowledge acquired by the student is undoubtedly reflected in his/her performance in the clinical arena and in many of the other planned learning activities, formative feedback is provided midrotation and at the end of the rotation, with performance summatively measured at the conclusion of the rotation. Every student is observed and evaluated on interviewing, mental status exam, oral presentation and assessment and treatment planning skills. All students are required to take the National Board of Medical Examiners Subtest in Psychiatry.

We look forward to having each student rotate through our department or one of our AHEC sites.

For the 2011-12 Academic Year, site placements will be available for each six-week Psychiatry Clerkship block:

  • UNC Hospitals: 13-15 students
  • Central Regional Hospital (Butner): 3-5 students
  • Carolinas Medical Center (Charlotte): 3-4 students
