Seminar Series for the Clerkship

Seminars are intended to be interactive, focusing on the major psychiatric issues salient to becoming a competent physician, regardless of specialty choice. All students are required to participate in a core seminar series which is held 12-1 PM Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays in 238 MacNider. UNC students attend seminar in person. CRH, WakeBrook and CMC students attend the seminars via teleconference; when CRH students are at UNC for outpatient clinics they will attend seminars along with UNC students in 238 MacNider. There are also 4 Team-Based Learning (TBL) sessions that occur during Orientation Day, the Dayback, and two Tuesdays at noon during the clerkship. Preparation is expected, as there are graded quizzes for each TBL. CRH students will join the UNC students in Chapel Hill for the Tuesday TBL's; CMC and UNC-WakeBrook will videoconference in.

The seminar series schedule may vary slightly on each rotation; however, topics will remain the same, which include:

  • Psychotic Disorders: overview, assessment and treatment
  • Depressive Disorders: overview, assessment and treatment
  • Bipolar Disorder: overview, assessment and treatment
  • Anxiety Disorders: overview, assessment and treatment
  • Dementia: overview, assessment and treatment
  • Delirium: overview, assessment and treatment
  • Somatoform and Factitious Disorders: overview, assessment and treatment
  • Substance Use Disorders: overview, assessment and treatment
  • Child Psychiatry: developmental overview, disorders and treatment
  • Personality Disorders
  • Peri-Partum Psychiatric Disorders
  • Eating Disorders: overview, assessment and treatment
  • Countertransference and the Patient-Physician Relationship
  • Introduction to Psychotherapy and Motivational Interviewing

 

The schedule of lectures as well as UNC Case Conferences will be distributed at orientation and will be posted on the Student Login portion of the Clerkship Schedules part of the website. Please see Educational Activities / Resources for a list of the lecture topics and suporting materials.  In addition each site may offer additional child and/or adult case conferences.   Students should check their e-mail daily for any updates.

Textbooks may be purchased from the Medical School Bookstore. Students should read the section(s) pertaining to the upcoming lecture(s) recommended textbooks prior to each week's session.    A list of lecture topics, handouts and powerpoints are available in the Resources section.    Students should look for those relevant to each day's lecture topic in advance of the lecture.

Attendance at seminars is required of all students unless excused in advance.   Attendance at seminars takes precedence over all except urgent patient care situations.

Each site also provides additional educational opportunities for students, such as case conferences or additional lectures.

UNC students are also encouraged to attend the Psychiatry Department Grand Rounds , held each Wednesday, 1:00 -2:30 PM from September - May in 321 MacNider (except for the first Wednesday of each month) if their schedules permit.  Attendance at Grand Rounds is not required.   Please contact Ms. Daniel for instructions to access these if you are interested.
