Psychiatry Clerkship Recommended Textbooks

It is highly recommended that students independently read throughout the rotation. Preparing for seminars will enhance your learning experience. Additionally, students are strongly encouraged to read about the conditions and treatment options they encounter in their clinical experiences. Below is a list of books useful for the clerkship.

Black, Donald W. and Andreasen, Nancy C. Introductory Textbook of Psychiatry, Fifth Edition. Washington, DC: American Psychiatric Publishing, Inc., 2011.   (Paperback,717 pages)

A solid textbook covering all major areas of psychiatry, used commonly in psychiatric clerkships and preclinical psychiatry courses.  Unfortunately not available electronically. Older editions may be available as well.

Zimmerman, Mark. Interview Guide for Evaluating DSM-IV Psychiatric Disorders And The Mental Status Exam.  Philadelphia: Psych Press Products, 1994.  (Paperback,142 pages)

An inexpensive and useful pocket guide to the psychiatric interview.

Stead, Latha; Kaufman, Matthew and Yanofski, Jason. First Aid for the Psychiatry Clerkship, Third Edition (First Aid Series). McGraw-Hill Medical, 2011. (Paperback, 218 pages)

Students have noted this as a useful study guide for the NBME subtest.
