Typical Clerkship Schedules

UNC PSYCHIATRY CLERKSHIP EXAMPLE SCHEDULE

UNC Psychiatry Students will work on 2 clinical services or the Consultation/Liaison service.  They will spend 3 weeks on each service. They will also have 2 half-days of longitudinal outpatient clinics each week.

*OUTPATIENT CLINIC: Each student is assigned 2 half-days of outpatient clinic, which will be consistent throughout the rotation. The days/times may vary by student schedule.

**WEEKEND CALL: Each student is assigned up to one weekend day of call per rotation.

***WEEKDAY CALL: Each student is assigned 1-3 days of weekday call (1 if the student is assigned a weekend call day, 3 if the student is not assigned any weekend call).

****CASE CONFERENCE: Three patient interview/case conferences are held for UNC students during the rotation. Days of the week/times may vary.

*****INTERVIEW SKILL BUILDING WITH TUTOR: Each student is assigned an upper-level resident tutor to assist them in developing interviewing skills. They will meet at least 4 times per rotation. The actual days and times will vary according to student and resident schedule, even varying from week to week.

CMC PSYCHIATRY CLERKSHIP EXAMPLE SCHEDULE

CMC Psychiatry Students will work on 2 clinical services: The CMC-Randolph Emergency Department and a combination inpatient/outpatient rotation. They will spend 3 weeks on each in each of these blocks.

CMC-Randolph Emergency Department Block

*Approximately three teaching conferences are held per week.  The days/times may vary. The majority are sessions with Dr. Mundle.  These include the Interview Skill Building Program for CMC. There is also a Psychotherapy Conference that is held approximately three times in the clerkship.

**Students are expected to spend the equivalent of 8 hours per day, M-F, in the ED.  Students are given autonomy as to scheduling their time in the ED.  Many students find participation in morning rounds useful.  It is also recommended for students to follow up on their patients if they are admitted to the hospital.  Afternoons/evenings provide more clinical opportunities for students.

***Several “Clinical Field Trips” are arranged during the ED rotation. The days/times/length of these experiences vary. Examples are substance abuse centers, commitment court, ECT, and visits with private practitioners.

CMC Inpatient/Outpatient Block

 

CMC Inpatient/Outpatient Block

*CMC TEACHING CONFERENCE: Approximately three teaching conferences are held per week.  The days/times may vary. The majority are sessions with Dr. Mundle.  There is also a Psychotherapy Conference that is held approximately three times in the clerkship.

**INPATIENT WORK: Students participate in rounds and treatment team daily, M-F. The actual hours may vary.

***OUTPATIENT CLINIC: Students participate regularly in outpatient clinics during this half of the rotation.  The actual days/times may vary.

CRH PSYCHIATRY CLERKSHIP EXAMPLE SCHEDULE

CRH Psychiatry Students will work on 1 clinical service on the Acute Adult Unit (AAU) for a total of 6 weeks. Students will also have the opportunity to gain clinical experience on a variety of other services throughout the rotation. They will also have 1 day of longitudinal outpatient clinics each week.

*OUTPATIENT CLINIC: Each student is assigned 1 day of outpatient clinic, which will be consistent throughout the rotation. The days/times may vary by student schedule.

**WEEKEND CALL: Each student is assigned 1 Saturday call per rotation (8am – 4pm).

***WEEKDAY CALL: Each student is assigned 1 day of weekday call (5pm – 10pm).

****INTERVIEW  SKILL BUILDING WITH CHIEF RESIDENT: The UNC chief resident spends one day each week at CRH. The resident works with the students on clinical assessments and interviewing skills. Each student will typically interview a patient while the others observe, and then discuss each case in detail afterward.
