At UNC Radiology, we seek to provide excellent and compassionate state-of-the-art care to our patients, equip medical students with basic imaging knowledge, train future academic and private practice radiologists, and engage in cutting edge basic and clinical research.

The Department provides a wide array of diagnostic imaging tests utilizing the most advanced imaging equipment available, ranging from conventional x-ray to dual source multi-detector CT, 3 Tesla MRIs and multi-slice PET/CT. A variety of sophisticated and advanced image-guided treatment procedures, such as radiofrequency, cryo and microwave ablation of tumors, uterine fibroid embolization, kyphoplasty, and occlusion of intracranial aneurysms are also available. At UNC Radiology, not only are we pioneers in pushing the boundaries of this exciting field, but we also take great pride in being leaders in providing the safest care available. 

At UNC Radiology, we have editors of prominent journals, authors of leading textbooks, and individuals who hold high positions in national radiological organizations such as the American College of Radiology and the American Board of Radiology.

UNC Radiology offers 8 highly competitive residency positions annually in what is considered one of the best training programs in the United States.  We also offer fellowship positions in neuroradiology, abdominal imaging, thoracic imaging, breast imaging, MR imaging research, musculoskeletal, nuclear medicine and vascular interventional radiology.

The main department is housed in a state of the art facility completed in 2002. UNC Radiology also has a large presence (breast imaging and nuclear medicine) in the new North Carolina Cancer Hospital, completed in 2009. We are also privileged to be part of one of the nation’s most prominent and comprehensive healthcare campuses featuring the UNC Schools of Medicine, Public Health, Pharmacy, Nursing, and Dentistry.  This unique setting provides ample opportunity to engage in interdisciplinary research not available at most other institutions.  It is an exciting time to be at UNC with the recent passage of an unprecedented and visionary budget proposal by the NC General Assembly which will help the UNC and the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center become the nation’s best university cancer center.

UNC Radiology will provide the foundation for the imaging needs in conjunction with the Biomedical Research Imaging Center (BRIC), which will propel research into the imaging sciences.
