16th Annual Radiology-BRIC Research Symposium a success

The UNC Department of Radiology in conjunction with the UNC Biomedical Research Imaging Center (BRIC) held their joint research symposium May 22nd, 2008. As has been the tradition over the last 2 years, research presentations were broken into basic science and clinical science with leaders in basic science research and clinical science research presenting keynote presentations.

This year's keynote speakers included Dr. Thomas Meade, a renowned chemist from Northwestern University, whose talk was entitled "Seeing is Believing: Molecular Probes That tell it like it is," and Dr. Kimberly Applegate, acclaimed pediatric radiologist from Indiana University, whose talk was entitled, "Applying New Technology in Children: Risks and Benefits."

This year over 70 abstracts were accepted for publication and reflect the broad and varied research endeavors of UNC Radiology and the BRIC. Abstracts accepted ranged from groundbreaking work in nanotechnology and field leading research in breast imaging and MRI to web design. Dr. Mauro, Pisano, Semelka, and Lin would like to thank all those who submitted their research efforts to help make this year's symposium a success.

This year's research award winners were:

Yueh Z Lee, Dynamic Carbon Nanotube Micro-CT Gated Imaging of Free-Breathing Mice. First Place Basic Science.

Sarah J Hart. Neuroimaging Executive-emotional Processing in Adolescents at Genetic Risk for Schizophrenia. Second Place Basic Science.

Rebecca Wertman. Risk of Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis: Evaluation of Gadolinium Chelate Contrast Agents by Four American Universities.
