Abdominal Imaging
Six faculty members and up to 3 fellows perform all diagnostic work involving the abdomen and pelvis. This includes interpretation of plain films, CT, US and MRI, as well as the performance of numerous fluoroscopic procedures and approximately 200 percutaneous biopsies each year. Nearly 50% of the US work involves evaluation of the vascular anatomy of pre-and post- liver or kidney transplant patients. All CT scans are performed on 16,40 or 64-slice multi-detector scanners that all allow nearly immediate 3D renderings of the urinary tract, vascular system, lungs and skeleton. MR imaging is performed on four 1.5T units with a 3.0T machine installed in 2005. MR is used more frequently and for more applications in the abdomen and pelvis than almost anywhere else in the country. Unique programs include screening for pancreatic and liver cancer, imaging of pregnant women with abdominal pain, and fetal imaging for birth defects.
