The Interventional Radiology section at UNC performs a broad range of procedures. The service performs approximately 7000 procedures per year in seven angiography suites. Included among these are diagnostic and therapeutic angiography, chemo and radioembolizations for liver tumors, radiofrequency ablation of liver, lung and kidney masses, uterine fibroid embolizations, biliary drainage, renal interventions, vertebroplasty/kyphoplasty, TIPSS, IVC filter placement, abscess drainage, dialysis access maintenance, and central venous access.

We have an active inpatient service and utilize an outpatient clinic for pre- and post-procedure consultations. In addition, the VIR section oversees the interpretation of the CTAs and MRAs. Fellows have the opportunity to gain experience with peripheral vascular ultrasound within the peripheral vascular lab.

The VIR section participates in multiple interdisciplinary conferences such as abdominal tumor and hepatobiliary conferences. Didactic and case-based teaching conferences are an integral part of the fellowship education.

The UNC VIR section is involved multiple ongoing research projects and supervised fellow participation in research is strongly encouraged.
