ABOUT OUR PROGRAM

The Department of Radiology at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine offers a one-year fellowship in Musculoskeletal Imaging. Under the supervision of expert faculty attendings, fellows will interpret the full gamut of musculoskeletal imaging modalities including radiographs, CT, US and MRI as well as perform a variety of interventional procedures such as image-guided bone and soft tissue biopsies as well as joint injections/aspirations.

The University of North Carolina Hospitals is a Level I Trauma Center and tertiary referral center for orthopedic oncology. In addition, the UNC Health Care System serves the UNC collegiate athletic teams as well as several community orthopedic referral groups. As a result, fellows can expect to see a well-rounded mix of trauma, orthopedic oncology, sports medicine, infection and rheumatology cases.

Our goal is to provide exceptional subspecialty training for our fellows so that they are equally well prepared for a career in either academic or private practice musculoskeletal radiology following training. Furthermore,we aim to foster excellent communication and positive relationships with not only our colleagues in radiology but also our referring clinicians and imaging technologists.
We expect all fellows to be punctual, hardworking, and demonstrate professionalism in their interactions with our division, patients, and other members of the UNC health care team.

Fellows will interpret musculoskeletal MRIs and CT and will staff out those studies in person with the attending on the cross-sectional shift. In the spirit of graded independence, the fellow will initially staff radiographs then eventually allowed to read independently from the plain film list as the year progresses.

In addition to performing a wide variety of procedures, fellows will be responsible for taking, working up, and presenting biopsy requests to the division during our daily 12:30 biopsy review conference.

Fellows will also be expected to attend dedicated fellow education conferences run by division faculty. Fellows will attend and eventually present at multidisciplinary conferences on a rotating basis.

All shifts currently take place at the main UNC Hospital campus.

Fellows will take musculoskeletal subspecialty call once every 5-6 weeks. On call weekends the fellow will independently sign emergent and inpatient MSK studies. During the week of call the fellow will also be assigned to cover the after hours procedure pager.

Fellows are permitted and encouraged to participate in any in-house moonlighting opportunities offered by the department for additional pay. External moonlighting opportunities are also available in the local community.
As a non-ACGME accredited fellowship with independent call, our fellows are paid above PGY level at a salary of $95,000.
Fellows earn 4 weeks (20 days) of vacation for the year with an additional week of vacation over the Christmas/New Years’ holidays.

UNC’s Division of Musculoskeletal Imaging will be participating in the NRMP’s 2023-2024 Fellowship Match. For more information on how to apply to our fellowship program, click HERE.
