Diabetes Mentoring Program

Heels and Hearts is a student diabetes group sponsored by UNC Campus Health Services. We are interested in community outreach to people with diabetes especially to children. Heels and Hearts teams will be at RTP for the ADA walk Sept 30 http://www.diabetes.org and the JDRF walk on Oct 28. http://walk.jdrf.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=extranet.personalpage&confirmid=86435031 .

We would especially like to let you know about our DIABETES MENTOR PROGRAM. UNC students and recent graduates have developed a contact program to provide phone support to youth with diabetes. With the parent's approval, the youth may call one of our mentors. Mentors have been trained in effective listening skills, appropriate boundaries and when to refer an issue to the patient's health care team. Our Campus Health Services diabetes team professionals provide training and support for the mentors. If you would like a contact list of Heels and Hearts diabetes mentors for your clinic, please send email to Margaret Vimmerstedt MD.
