New NIH policy on Multiple Principal Investigators

MULTIPLE PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR INITIATIVE LAUNCHED
All Federal research agencies are currently preparing for the implementation of policies and procedures to formally allow more than one Principal Investigator (PI) on individual research awards. This presents a new and important opportunity for investigators seeking support for projects or activities that clearly require a “team science” approach. The multiple-PI option is targeted specifically to those projects that do not fit the single-PI model, and therefore is intended to supplement, and not to replace, the traditional single PI model. The overarching goal is to maximize the potential of team science efforts, responsive to the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century.

Participate

  1. The UNC Roadmap Executive Committee encourages Principal Investigators to think about developing large, multi-PI, multi-disciplinary proposals. Even if there is no current NIH RFA of interest, it may be worthwhile to plan ahead. Please contact the Roadmap Executive Committee for discussion and/or advice.
  2. The Roadmap Executive Committee is interested in supporting additional workshop/symposia-type activities that encourage Principal Investigators from different fields to learn about each other’s work. Please contact the committee for further information.
  3. The Roadmap Executive Committee wishes to establish a network of contacts at the NIH and other granting agencies. If you are a member of an NIH (or other agency) grants panel or other committee, please let us know.

Finding Collaborators

The UNC GrantSource Library maintains a database of abstracts that is searchable by subject keyword, department name, or investigator name. You can use this service to find other researchers who share your interests. Or contact us.
