Funding Opportunities
Federal research and development funding for stroke research includes recently announced initiatives and programs from the following agencies:
Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): The CDC offers some stroke funding, including for the Paul Coverdell Acute National Stroke Registry.
National Institutes of Health (NIH): The official NIH information source for grants and other funding opportunities from all NIH institutes and centers.
Listed below are the funding web pages for individual NIH institutes that support research on or related to stroke.
- National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) – supports research in diseases of the heart, blood vessels, lung, and blood, including heart disease and stroke
- National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases -- supports basic and applied research in diabetes (including stroke), endocrinology, and metabolic diseases; digestive diseases and nutrition; and kidney, urologic, and hematologic diseases
- National Institute of Mental Health - supports research on mental health, including stroke and depression
- National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) - biomedical research on disorders of the brain and nervous system, including stroke
- National Institute on Aging - funds studies on aging and stroke
- American Academy of Neurology (AAN) Education and Research Foundation provides neurology awards and fellowships
- American College of Cardiology provides financial awards to advance research in cardiovascular disease
- American Federation for Aging Research (AFAR) funds research in aging and geriatric medicine
- American Heart Association (AHA) supports research in heart disease and stroke
- Child Neurology Foundation funds research on child neurology and promoting the optimal care and welfare of children with neurological and neurodevelopmental disorders, including childhood stroke
- Congress of Neurological Surgeons offers fellowships to neurosurgical residents or graduates in clinical or basic research in the field of brain repair
- Hazel G. Goddess Fund funds young investigators focusing on strokes in women
- Hearst Foundation supports programs that seek to improve and assure access to quality health care for underserved populations in both urban and rural areas, especially the elderly and the disabled
- Japan Vascular Disease Research Foundation awards a researcher who has achieved a highly remarkable and internationally regarded result in basic research on vasculardiseases such as hypertension, arteriosclerosis, diabetes, and so forth
- McKnight Endowment Fund for Neuroscience administers three awards that support young and established neuroscientists and encourage interdisciplinary collaboration
- National Organization for Rare Disorders, Inc. (NORD) is accepting applications for a one-year grant for a clinical research study related to the cause or treatment of thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP)
- Neuroradiology Education and Research Foundation offers the NER Foundation Grant for CT and MR Perfusion
- Christopher Reeve Foundation provides Quality of Life grants designed to improve opportunities, access, and day-to-day quality of life for individuals living with disabilities, primarily paralysis, and their families
