Eugenia Garvin (Penn CSP) publishes op-ed in The Inquirer illustrating the health benefits of cleaned up and greened vacant city lots. The study focused on more than 4,000 vacant city lots that have been cleaned up and planted with grass and trees under the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society's Vacant Land Stabilization Program. The research found there were fewer gun crimes in neighborhoods where lots had been "cleaned and greened." Some residents also reported experiencing less stress and exercising more.

Michael Hochman (UCLA CSP – VA Scholar) leads study finding that results of medication studies in top medical journals may be misleading to readers. Journal of General Internal Medicine. DOI: 10.1007/s11606-011-1813-7. Researchers analyzed all the randomized medication trials published in the six highest-impact general medicine journals between June 1, 2008, and Sept. 30, 2010, to determine the prevalence of three types of outcome measures that make data interpretation difficult.

Jeffrey Kullgren (Penn CSP – VA Scholar) leads study that identifies health care barriers beyond cost. Kullgren JT, et al. Nonfinancial barriers and access to care for US adults. Health Services Research online, 2011. The study's findings include a range of nonfinancial healthcare barriers including limited doctor’s office hours, inability to get a quick appointment, and distance to the doctor’s office. Kullgren and colleagues looked at data from the 2007 Health Tracking Household Survey, which gathered health information from nearly 18,000 people across the United States.

Stephen Henry (Michigan CSP – VA Scholar) and team publish study on non-verbal cues that guide doctor-patient relationships in the Journal of Evaluation in Clinical Practice. 6 Jan 2011. DOI: 10.1111/j.1365-2753.2010.01628.x. In the study, “‘How do you know what Aunt Martha looks like?’ A video elicitation study exploring tacit clues in doctor–patient interactions,” researchers analyzed video recordings of routine checkups and conducted follow-up interviews with participants to help elucidate signals sent and received on both sides of the examination table. The method shows promise for improving medical decision making by allowing doctors to better understand how they make judgments and what messages they may be unwittingly conveying to patients.

Christoph Lee (UCLA CSP) was awarded the 2011-2012 E. Stephen Amis, Jr., MD, Fellowship in Quality and Safety by the American College of Radiology

The Fellowship is sponsored by the Commission on Quality and Safety, provides the opportunity for one radiology fellow to obtain direct exposure to the functions of the Department of Quality and Safety at the ACR. The department manages programs that accredit facilities in mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, breast ultrasound, MRI, CT, nuclear medicine, PET, radiation oncology and ultrasound. The department is also responsible for the ACR Appropriateness Criteria(r), Practice Guidelines and Technical Standards, BI-RADS(r), RADPEERTM, radiation safety, quality improvement, Pay for Performance initiatives and the National Radiology Data Registry. Dr. Lee will be spending two weeks during his second year of his Clinical Scholars Program (one week each in Sept 2011 and May 2012) in Washington, DC, getting a glimpse as to how the ACR Commission on Quality and Safety manages the aforementioned programs. Afterwards, he will have the opportunity to submit an article to the Journal of the American College of Radiology (JACR) on his topic of interest.

Stephen Henry (Michigan CSP, VA Scholar) receives grant to explore explore racial disparities in pain management

A $74,000 grant recently awarded by the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Foundation will fund a collaboration by the University of Michigan and Wayne State University to investigate the causes underlying well-documented but poorly understood racial disparities in pain management. Pain is the most common symptom for which patients seek medical care from primary care providers -- but patients often feel doctors don’t take their pain seriously, and doctors worry about creating dependency by prescribing narcotics. The study will be the first to delve into outpatient pain management by analyzing video recordings of primary care doctors discussing pain with African American patients from Detroit - a population that reports more frequent and more severe pain than the state average. The grant is part of an ongoing collaboration led by Stephen Henry, M.D., a researcher in the U-M Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholars program, and Susan Eggly, Ph.D., a researcher in the Communication and Behavioral Oncology group at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute at Wayne State University.

Adam Landman (Yale CSP) and Zachary Meisel (Penn CSP) co-author article looking at the Clinical Scholars program in the context of a specialized research training for emergency physicians (EPs)

Specialized research training for emergency physicians (EPs) may strengthen overall patient care through the development and improvement of clinical evidence in emergency care. One way an increasing number of emergency physicians have acquired these skills is through the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholars Program (CSP), a 2-year fellowship that trains physicians to be leaders in improving health care. In addition to providing training in health policy and health services research, the CSP emphasizes the translation of research into action through leadership training, program development, and community-based participatory research. This article provides an in-depth look at the CSP and its impact on emergency medicine (EM).

Dr. Matthew Press (Penn CSP) authors Pittsburgh Post-Gazette article on VA and health care reform

Today, in parades and ceremonies across the country, Americans will celebrate Veterans Day. The holiday is a time to commemorate the heroism and service of our bravest men and women. But with the high-stakes political struggle over health-care reform nearing a climax, we also should spend this Veterans Day honoring -- and learning from -- another source of pride for our country: Veterans Affairs medical centers. VA medical centers serve as an example of the kind of integrated and coordinated health-care delivery that we should expect to see in our reformed system.

Craig Pollack, Penn Scholar, co-authors study in Archives of Internal Medicine on the geographic accessibility of retail clinics for underserved populations

The findings of Pollack and Armstrong showing that retail clinics have not, so far, been located in medically underserved areas are consistent with similar studies and are not surprising. Most retail clinic operators have not presented themselves as primary care providers, nor have they indicated a focus on serving underserved populations. As operators have gained traction and sought to open additional sites, many have begun to look to these clinics as a potential piece in the puzzle of increasing access to primary care services, raising the question of whether and how they might play a role.

Dr. Anish Majahan lead author of new study that addresses misconceptions about barriers to CDC's HIV testing recommendations

LOS ANGELES—Since the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released revised recommendations for opt-out HIV testing in 2006, there has been significant debate around the barriers to widespread implementation of the recommendations. A new study by a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) reveals that the majority of states have laws that do not interfere with implementation of the guidelines, and contrary to what some have argued, the guidelines include protections for the patient.
