Register Now: May 4th Translating Research to Policy Webinar Sponsored by the RWJF Alumni Network
Would you like to be an influential voice when members of Congress, governors, state legislators and city councils debate the most pressing health and health care issues facing Americans today?
Would you like your research or work to drive meaningful public policy change at the federal, state or local level?
From restaurant smoking bans in small town city halls to Medicare coverage decisions in the halls of Congress, public officials make critical decisions every day that affect the health and health care of all Americans. Your everyday work addresses critical health and health care issues and has the potential to guide public policymakers as they make these important choices. But policymakers sometimes do not have the benefit of cutting-edge information because they do not speak the same language as researchers.
To help make your voice heard among policymakers, the RWJF Alumni Network is hosting a webinar focused on enhancing the public policy impact of your research and program results. During the webinar, communications experts from D.C.-based Spitfire Strategies and Burness Communications will share some of the best ways to translate your work into language that is accessible – and therefore actionable – by policymakers.
The 75-minute webinar–Translating Research to Policy–will take place on Friday, May 4 at 1 p.m. ET.
Reserve a spot today and register for this exciting online meeting.
Also, please take a few minutes to answer the following questions so we can better address your specific questions, needs and concerns during the webinar.
Questions? Contact the Alumni Network Community Manager at AlumniWebFeedback@rwjf.org.

In December 2011, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation released survey findings indicating that 85 percent of primary care doctors surveyed feel it is as important to address patients ’ social needs as it is to treat their medical conditions. Overwhelmingly, they wish they had greater capacity to eliminate social barriers to their patients’ health – things like access to nutritious foods, housing assistance and reliable transportation – and want the ability to write prescriptions to connect patients with such resources.
To continue this important conversation – and identify solutions to bridge the gap between medical care and social needs – the Foundation invites you to participate in a national discussion with prominent health care leaders.
“Under Pressure:Transforming the Health Care Workforce”
Wednesday, April 4, 2012 from 2:00–3:00 p.m. Eastern Time

As our health care system adapts to rapid changes spurred by out of control costs and increasing demand, all of us are under pressure to keep pace. In January 2012, the Bureau of Labor of Statistics revealed that the health care sector added more than 300,000 jobs in 2011, and predicted continued growth in the years to come. Nursing is one of the fastest growing professions in the US, while physicians and surgeons can expect a 24 percent growth in jobs by 2018, according to the report.
But the situation on the ground is far more nuanced and complicated than these numbers suggest.
Join our multidisciplinary panel of RWJF grantee experts to discuss how changes in the health care workforce will affect you, and the challenges – and possible solutions – that lie ahead.

Harlan Krumholz (Yale CSP Director) co-authors study on national and regional trends in heart failure hospitalization and mortality rates for Medicare beneficiaries published in JAMA: 2011;306(15):1669-1678. The study found overall heart failure hospitalization rates declined substantially from 1998 to 2008 but at a lower rate for black men. The overall 1-year mortality rate declined slightly over the past decade but remains high. Additionally, changes in heart failure hospitalization and 1-year mortality rates were uneven across states.

Georgina Lucas (Yale CSP Deputy Director) is selected to receive an Elm Ivy Award – an award given to individuals who expand the partnership between Yale and the community.
As deputy director of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholars program at Yale, Georgina Lucas trains select physicians to become leaders in improving the nation’s health and health care. When it comes to leadership, Georgina certainly sets a high bar. Armed with her Masters in Social Work, Georgina has contributed to many significant initiatives over the years including improving mental health services to underserved populations and establishing partnerships between the public and private sectors focused on long term care for the elderly.
At Yale, the core mission of the Clinical Scholars program is to work with community members to meet community health needs. Georgina recognizes that this does not mean taking one’s area of interest and forcing its implementation. She trains her scholars that the most impactful studies are ones that are identified by the community as a need and supported by the community as an integral part of the process. It is research collaboration in its truest form. In order for her scholars to become leaders, they must first become partners with the community.
Georgina has developed relationships within New Haven that allow her to guide her scholars in projects throughout the city. Among the projects Georgina has overseen are Project ACCESS, providing medical care and assistance to the uninsured, and Photo Voice, which provided cameras to New Haven children so they could tell stories about their lives

CSP Alumni & Recruitment Receptions
This past open application period, the NPO sponsored two alumni & recruitment receptions on a pilot basis, one in Chicago and one in Boston. The receptions successfully brought alumni together to network and engaged prospective medical residents and medical students. We asked alumni to bring one or more prospective applicants. Attendees briefly talked about their research interests. The receptions gave alumni the chance to reconnect and yielded applicants and several acceptances into the 2010-2012 cohort. As such, we will be holding two receptions during the upcoming open application period in January 2010:
- Seattle, University of Washington - 1/14/2010 6:00 - 8:00 PM (Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture, University of Washington Campus)
- New York City, Mount Sinai School of Medicine - 1/21/2010 5:30 - 8:00 PM (Mount Sinai School of Medicine - Outside the Hatch auditorium)
Peter Ubel (Co-Director Michigan CSP) co-authors study examing the polarizing effect of news media messages about the social determinants of health
Framing health problems in terms of the social determinants of health aims to shift policy attention to nonmedical strategies to improve population health, yet little is known about how the public responds to these messages. We conducted an experiment to test the effect of a news article describing the social determinants of type 2 diabetes on the public’s support for diabetes prevention strategies. We found that exposure to the social determinants message led to a divergence between Republicans’ and Democrats’ opinions, relative to their opinions after viewing an article with no message about the causes of diabetes. These results signify that increasing public awareness of the social determinants of health may not uniformly increase public support for policy action.

In many underserved communities, "research" is a loaded word that sets expectations of
being examined or exploitedThis is more likely when data are published but not
otherwise shared, such as in a community forum. Research, whether it intends to or not,
may disadvantage groups by highlighting problems rather than assets. Research can
thus become a symbol of distance between community reality and the "ivory tower,"
where few mechanisms exist to facilitate community access to knowledge. Academics
may view pursuit of knowledge as paramount and in entering research partnerships take
such perspectives personally rather than as an expected subject of ongoing discussion.

UCLA Clinical Scholars program Co-Director Dr. Robert Brook, MD, ScD writes commentary on health care quality, transparency and the US government in the Journal of the American Medical Association
JAMA. 2009;301(13):1377-1378.
Some solutions for producing a better health care system in the United States and abroad call for paying clinicians more for better performance. For this solution to work, valid and reliable measures of performance must be available. Although the quality-of-care field has matured and many such measures have been produced, a need for better methods and indicators by which performance can be assessed remains.
In 2001, the government of California, responding to calls to improve quality of care, decided to produce routinely available statewide reports on mortality following isolated coronary artery bypass surgery, by hospital and physician.1 The outcome-reporting program is housed in the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development. I was asked to chair the committee that oversees the production of these reports, the purpose of which is to increase public and professional knowledge about this procedure.
Committee members include health services researchers, . . .
