Arshiya Baig

Arshiya Baig, M.D., M.P.H.
University of California, Los Angeles


Arshiya Baig, M.D. M.P.H. is an internist who graduated from the Tufts University School of Medicine and completed her internal medicine residency at the University of Michigan. As a Clinical Scholar, Dr. Baig has worked on community-based participatory research projects with Los Angeles-based advocacy groups on improving healthcare delivery to low-income, uninsured minorities through faith-based services. She also is conducting research that investigates the importance of social networks in vulnerable populations, and on physician domestic violence screening practices in domestic and international settings

Kristina Cordasco

Kristina Cordasco, M.D.
University of California, Los Angeles


Kristina Cordasco, M.D., M.P.H. is an internist who graduated from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and completed residency training in the internal medicine primary care program at the University of California, San Francisco. She has also received a Master’s in Public Health, with a certificate in Health Finance and Management, from Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. Her interests involve systems issues in the delivery of health care, especially for vulnerable populations. She is currently working on a project with the Los Angeles Department of Health Services developing and evaluating a low-literacy bilingual hospital discharge medication education tool.

Kristen A. Feemster, M.D.
University of Pennsylvania


Kristen A. Feemster, MD MPH is a pediatrician who received her M.D. and M.P.H. from Columbia University and completed residency training in pediatrics at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Prior to starting in medicine, Kristen worked in a community-based youth program for children from low-income neighborhoods across Connecticut- this sparked an interest in the effects of neighborhood environment on health that has been coupled with an interest in pediatric infectious diseases. Her research interests focus upon the social and environmental factors affecting the prevalence, prevention and control of communicable diseases; the application of spatial analysis techniques to better understand these factors; and the development of vaccine policy both domestically and internationally. As an RWJ fellow, her research activities include a project in partnership with the Philadelphia Department of Public Health investigating predictors for the late-initiation of immunizations, a project investigating the potential of a primary care network to perform community-based infectious disease surveillance, a project investigating pediatrician intentions and behaviors towards the administration of the new human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, and a project with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention evaluating HPV vaccine data from the new Teen Component of the National Immunization Survey.

Ying Ying Goh

Ying-Ying Goh, M.D.
University of California, Los Angeles


Ying-Ying Goh, M.D. is a pediatrician who attended Stanford Medical School and completed her residency training at the Boston Combined Residency in Pediatrics. Her previous professional experience includes health care management consulting, healthcare financing research, and research on the attitudes and knowledge of pediatric residents on childhood overweight. As a Clinical Scholar, Dr. Goh conducted a community-based participatory research study on barriers to nutrition and physical activity among middle school students and possible interventions to reduce obesity. She is working with a research team and the Los Angeles Unified School District to implement and evaluate an after-school peer intervention based on this formative work. She is also interested in the influence of media on child and adolescent health behaviors and perceptions, and is conducting an analysis of the link between media and obesity in fifth graders.

Corita Grudzen

Corita Grudzen, M.D.
University of California, Los Angeles


Corita Grudzen, M.D. is an emergency medicine physician who graduated from the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine and completed an emergency medicine residency at Bellevue Hospital in New York. Her areas of interest are health policy, health and human rights, and global health equity. Dr. Grudzen’s current projects are on sex workers rights and health risk, improving EMS resuscitation policy to better reflect patient preferences, and palliative care in the emergency department.

Crista Johnson

Crista Johnson, M.D.
University of Michigan


Crista Johnson, MD is an Obstetrician/Gynecologist who received her undergraduate degree from Johns Hopkins University, and her medical degree from the Weill Medical College of Cornell University. She completed her residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology at the George Washington University Medical Center, where she also served as Administrative Chief Resident. Crista subsequently completed a fellowship in Female Sexual Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles. She is currently engaged in a community-based research collaboration with a Somali immigrant and refugee community examining barriers to health care access and utilization including stigmatization towards Female Genital Cutting (FGC), as well as the cultural implications of FGC on psychosexual sequela. She aims to develop strategies to improve health outcomes for immigrant women who have undergone FGC, as well as enhance the knowledge base and cultural competency among health care providers who care for these women.

Tara Lagu, M.D.
University of Pennsylvania


Tara Lagu, M.D., M.P.H. attended the Purdue University School of Pharmacy as an undergraduate and is a registered pharmacist in the state of Indiana. She went on to receive her M.D. and Masters degree in Public Health from the Yale University School of Medicine. In addition to her clinical duties as a General Internal Medicine resident at Brown, she participated in a project designed to help prevent overdose among substance abusers in Providence. Her desire to pursue research with a social justice focus was further strengthened by her time spent working in Eldoret, Kenya. As a Clinical Scholar, Tara is investigating quality of care in primary care settings with a particular focus on disadvantaged populations. She is particularly interested in the impact of patient comorbidity on cardiovascular risk factor managment and medication adherence."

Benjamin Springgate

Benjamin Springgate, M.D.
University of California, Los Angeles


Benjamin Springgate, M.D., M.P.H. is an internist and pediatrician who completed medical school and residency at Tulane University School of Medicine. He is interested in health disparities and health policy. He is currently working with community partners to evaluate and help determine action plans to address the access to care crisis in disaster affected southeast Louisiana following Hurricane Katrina. He is assisting partners in the development of their grassroots clinical programs for the uninsured and working with local policy makers to assist their evidence-based decision making for planning the recovery of the health sector.

Joanna Starrels, M.D.
University of Pennsylvania


Joanna Starrels, MD attended Wesleyan University where she majored in the Science in Society Program, an interdisciplinary curriculum in the history, sociology, and philosophy of science and medicine. She obtained her medical degree from Jefferson Medical College and completed her residency in Internal Medicine at Columbia University. She is board-certified in Internal Medicine and practices primarily at the Philadelphia VA Medical Center. She is currently a VA fellow in the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program at the University of Pennsylvania. Her research focuses on the health and societal consequences of drug and alcohol use, including antibiotic-resistant infections, firearm violence, and overdose mortality.
