Nathaniel DeNicola

Nathaniel DeNicola, M.D.
University of Pennsylvania


Nathaniel DeNicola, M.D. (VA Scholar) received his undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame. He earned his medical degree from the University of California, Irvine and completed residency at Tulane University. He has worked as an Assistant Medical Director in Southern California and served on the ACOG Louisiana Legislative Committee. His research interests include decision modeling for elective deliveries and antenatal corticosteroids for late preterm births. He will also investigate the use of social media in political action. He aspires to work in health policy and legislative affairs.

Brandi Freeman

Brandi Freeman, M.D.
University of Pennsylvania


Brandi Freeman, M.D. received her Bachelor’s of Science degree in Biology with minors in Chemistry and French from Duke University.  She completed a post- baccalaurete year at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN and then received her medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine.  While at Baylor, she took an additional year to complete the Clinical Research Training Program at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD.  Dr. Freeman completed pediatric residency training at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. She has served the Student National Medical Association as National President and also the National Medical Association as Postgraduate Physician Trustee. Dr. Freeman’s research interests include health disparities, the use of technology to improve communication between physicians and parents/patients and physician workforce diversity.

Nathan	Irvin

Nathan Irvin, M.D.
University of Pennsylvania


Nathan Irvin, M.D. received his undergraduate degree at the University of California at Riverside in biology, followed by a medical school degree from Harvard. He completed his emergency medicine treatment at the Alameda County Medical Center- Highland Hospital program, where he served as Chief Resident during his final year. Dr. Irvin is interested in youth violence and hospital based violence prevention programs, and in particular, exploring ways the emergency department can serve as an avenue to identify at risk individuals and get them into preventative programs.

Lindsay	Jubelt

Lindsay Jubelt, M.D.
University of Pennsylvania


Lindsay Jubelt, M.D. (VA Scholar) received her undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania and her medical degree from Stony Brook University. She completed residency in the primary care track at the Massachusetts General Hospital. Her research interests are in care delivery and focus on improving care coordination and the value of care for high-risk, chronically ill patients.

Chen Kenyon

Chen Kenyon, M.D.
University of Pennsylvania


Chen Kenyon, M.D. graduated with a degree in mathematics from University of Rochester and went on to medical school at Boston University and residency training at the Boston Combined Residency Program in Pediatrics where he served as a chief resident. He spent a year as a pediatric hospitalist and health services researcher at Children's Hospital Boston before starting the Clinical Scholars Program. His research interests include improving quality of care and reducing health care disparities for children with chronic disease. During the CSP, he will focus on identifying children with asthma with the highest resource utilization for enrollment in appropriately tailored interventions.

Roy Wade

Roy Wade, M.D.

Roy Wade, M.D., Ph.D., M.P.H. received his undergraduate and Ph.D from the Georgia Institute of Technology with a focus on Molecular Microbiology.  He completed medical school at Dartmouth Medical School and pediatric residency training at the University of Virginia.  After residency, he completed a Minority Health Policy Fellowship at Harvard Medical School earning an MPH in Health Policy Management at the Harvard School of Public Health. Dr. Wade is interested in coordination and improving care for children and youth in the welfare system.

Eugenia Garvin

Eugenia Garvin, M.D.
University of Pennsylvania


Eugenia Garvin, M.D. received her undergraduate degree  from Harvard University and her medical degree from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis Missouri. She is pursuing the Robert Wood Johnson Scholarship in the middle of her General Surgery Residency with Washington University. Dr. Garvin’s research  focuses on gunshot violence prevention, particularly as it relates to minority and urban males populations. Her aspiration is to become trained in public health research, and health policy advocacy for vulnerable populations.

Mana Golzari, M.D.

Mana Golzari, M.D.
University of Pennsylvania


Mana Golzari, M.D. received her undergraduate degree from Harvard University and her medical training was completed at Stanford University School of Medicine. She completed her pediatrics residency at the University of California San Francisco. Dr. Golzari’s primary research focus includes healthcare reform for incarcerated youth and interventions targeting youth violence. She was actively involved in modifying legislation in California related to healthcare policies for incarcerated youth upon reentry.

Manny Jimenez , M.D.

Manny Jimenez, M.D.

Manuel Jimenenz, M.D.  received his undergraduate degree from Rutgers University, and his Medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. His residency was at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington DC. Dr. Jimenez’ interests include improving the quality of life for children with developmental disabilities and/or chronic illness through improved clinical care and public policy. His research will focus on exploring the impact of parental health literacy on pediatric quality and patient safety.

Shreya Kangovi, M.D. (VA Scholar) received her undergraduate degree from Columbia University and her medical degree from Harvard University. She did a combined Internal Medicine/Pediatric at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania/Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.  Dr. Kangovi is pursuing community based research that will provide tools to lay the groundwork for establishing a of a city-wide Community Health Worker program.

Dawn Mautner

Dawn Mautner, M.D.

Dawn Mautner, M.D. completed her undergraduate degrees at Pomona College and Portland State University. Dr. Mautner spent two years prior to medical school in the Peace Corps in El Salvador, and returned to pursue and receive her medical degree from Penn State University.  She completed her Family Medicine residency at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, where she stayed on for an additional year as chief resident and Faculty Development Fellow.  Broadly, her research targets social determinants of health and policy and advocacy for underserved populations. She is focusing on professional workforce issues in vulnerable communities, with emphasis on youth mentoring programs.

Kalpana Narayan, M.D.

Kalpana Narayan, M.D.

Kalpana Narayan, M.D., M.Sc. received her undergraduate degree  from Rutgers and her medical degree from the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. She also received a Masters degree from the London School of Economics in Health Policy and Financing. Dr. Narayan’s research will explore geriatric capacity building within the hospital setting, more specifically in the emergency department and assess its role with cost and quality of care.  She hopes to address ways to improve efficiency of healthcare delivery to the elderly.

Anand Shah, M.D. (VA Scholar) received his undergraduate degree in Neuroscience and Behavioral Biology from Emory University and his medical degree at the Medical College of Wisconsin.  He completed his residency and chief residency in Emergency Medicine at Brown University.   Dr. Shah’s research focuses on health systems integration and quality of care.  During his RWJ training, he will examine the effects of health information technology when deployed as a quality improvement tool.

Sophia Jan, M.D. obtained her undergraduate degree from CUNY Brooklyn College and medical degree from SUNY Downstate Medical Center.  She then completed a combined residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center where she served as chief resident.  She is broadly interested in disparities in healthcare access and how children with special healthcare needs transition to adult care.

Jeffrey Kullgren, M.D., M.P.H.

Jeffrey Kullgren, M.D., M.P.H.

Jeff Kullgren, M.D., M.P.H. (VA Scholar) received his undergraduate and medical degrees from Michigan State University, and his public health degree from the University of Michigan.  He completed his internal medicine residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.  His current research interests include improving access to care for low-income populations and the use of public policy tools such as health incentives, insurance benefit design, and regulations to encourage healthy behaviors.

Amy Tsou, M.D., M.A.R.

Amy Tsou, M.D., M.A.R.

Amy Tsou, M.D., M.A. (VA Scholar) received her undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia before pursuing studies in studies in religion at Westminster Theological Seminary.  She trained at the University of Pennsylvania for medical school and completed residency in the department of neurology.  Her research interests include end of life care, cultural factors impacting decision-making and the role of media in healthcare.
