A parternship between Orange County Habitat for Humanity and SHAC is an exciting opportunity for volunteers! Each year for the past ten years, Health for Habitat has paired with another community group (for example, a church or business group) to raise money, coordinate, and recruit workers for the construction of a Habitat house. Health for Habitat must raise $10,000 of the total $35,000 cost per house; our partnership group is responsible for the rest. The remainder of the cost of the house is supplied by donations from Orange County Habitat for Humanity.
The average sales price of a single-family home in Orange County has increased every year for the last several years. The U.S. Housing and Urban Development Department defines affordable housing as housing that costs no more than 250% of the family's annual income, and requires no more than 30% of the family's monthly income to be spent on mortgage/rent and utilities.
Health for Habitat strives to:
• Build at least one house a year to benefit families of need in Orange County.
• Provide a means for students to donate their time and effort to a non-academic area
• Bring students from all of the UNC Health Affair Schools to serve to the community.
• Educate students about affordable housing and home safety.
Habitat for Humanity International brings volunteers, builders, and needy families together to build houses. Through generous donations and no-cost loans, Habitat for Humanity is able to provide financing for the houses while volunteers and the families themselves work to build them.

All students from any health affairs school and undergraduates interested in health-related fields are encouraged to help out on Saturdays for the morning (8:30am) and/or afternoon (12:30pm) shifts.
Building on Saturdays is a great learning experience as well as a break from the rigors of the classroom. Additionally, if you are an undergraduate who is interested in pursuing a career in a health-related field, this is a great way to get involved with SHAC and meet students in the field of your interest.

• Please arrive on time (8:15am for morning shifts, 12:30pm for afternoon shifts)! Signing in, the safety lecture and instructions take time to complete and all volunteers must be present to avoid delaying the fun part!
• Upon arriving at the work site, please sign in and make a nametag. It will take some time to get all the volunteers ready and instructed on the day's tasks. Take this time to drink water and spray on mosquito repellant!
• If there is a possibility of bad weather, please call 932-7077 extension 1 for updates on the building schedules or cancellations.
• Remember that construction sites are hazardous! Please be careful and act responsibly.
• The safety lecture at the beginning of the shift is important. Please listen!
• You will work at your own risk. By signing in, you are accepting the risk of working on the site. You are covered by Habitat's supplemental insurance while working.
What to bring and wear:
• Wear work clothes that are comfortable and you don't mind getting dirty.
• Only boots or other close-toed shoes are acceptable. No sandals are allowed for safety reasons.
• Since work usually occurs in the sun, please bring sunscreen.
• Hand tools and a nail apron will be provided, but if you have tools, please ID and bring them. Please do not bring power tools.
• Useful tools include a hammer, tape measure, pencil, retractable utility knife, gloves, and a tool belt. However, all of these will be provided as needed by Habitat.
• Please be considerate and respectful to other volunteers and the family by helping pick up trash and organize material at the end of your shift.
• Please put your nails and tools back into their respective boxes.
• Check with the supervisor to see if any additional help is needed.
• Lastly, sign out on the sheet provided.
