SHAC Outreach works with local communities to assess and discuss ways for community members to get involved in maintaining and improving their health. This includes identifying unmet needs, partnering with groups to form sustainable programs that can help inform the community these problems, and providing support through materials, expertise, and volunteers.
The Outreach program has enjoyed great success in its partnerships with the local community. Current programs include:
• Diabetes Clinics
Lattisville Grove Missionary Baptist Church and New Red Mountain Baptist Church have collaborated with SHAC Outreach to provide informational diabetes clinics. These programs offer foot care,
health education about the effects and possible complications of diabetes, pharmacy consultations and screenings for various health conditions that can lead to diabetes.
• Wellness Programs
Club Nova, a community center in Carrboro for adults with mental illness, has collaborated with SHAC Outreach to provide organized health-improving activities. Current programs include a walking
club to keep members motivated about exercise and a monthly cooking night that teaches members ways
to eat healthy and have fun too!
• Providing Food
Food For All has partnered with SHAC Outreach to provide food and health care assistance to the needy citizens of Hillsborough and surrounding areas.

The project was recently awarded 3rd place among interdisciplinary entries for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary's Award for Innovations in Health Promotion.
SHAC Special Projects works on a variety of ongoing projects and develops new projects each year. Many of these become sustainable ventures that are maintained by Community Outreach!
