About SALSA
Spanish-speakers Assisting Latinos Student Association (SALSA) provides a forum for the practice and development of Spanish language and clinical interpreting skills.
Our primary mission is to provide consistent and reliable interpreting services for the patients of the student-run volunteer clinic, SHAC. SHAC offers free health care every Wednesday evening at the Carrboro Community Health Center, a division of Piedmont Health Services, Inc. SALSA also provides interpreting and bilingual health education services at community health fairs, including La Fiesta del Pueblo, St. Thomas More and El Centro Hispano, among others.
Our membership is open to everyone interested in improving their ability to speak Spanish in healthcare settings. The majority of members are UNC-Chapel Hill students including undergraduate, health professional, graduate, and post-graduate students, in addition to bilingual members of the local community.
