Health Professions Recruitment and Exposure Program (HPREP)
The application deadline for HPREP 2013 has passed.
What is HPREP?
Health Professions Recruitment and Exposure Program "HPREP" is an outreach program designed to provide high school students with the opportunity to interact with medical students, faculty and health professionals.
UNC Healthcare highlights HPREP success
Who are HPREP students?
High school students like you, from across the Triangle and central NC area who are motivated and interested in medicine, allied health careers or science. HPREP is designed for members of minority ethnic groups, although others are welcome to apply.
What exactly happens at HPREP?
Students meet at the UNC School of Medicine for seven Saturdays, January 26-March 9 from 9:45 AM - 2:00 PM. For the fist 5 weeks there is about an hour of fun, interactive teaching of human body organ systems and diseases, gross anatomy labs (have you ever held a real human heart in your hands?!) and a discussion on the topic of the day. Students will also have a health professional shadowing experience one Saturday morning. There will also be more structured opportunities to interact with medical professionals, medical students and UNC college students. Breakfast and lunch will be provided each Saturday.
- Weeks 1-2: Cardiovascular (Heart) Health
- Weeks 3-4: Renal (Kidney) Health
- Week 5: Preparing for College and Beyond with insight from UNC college & medical students
- Week 6: Annual HPREP Health & Medicine Expo
- Week 7: Closing Ceremony
Parents/guardians are invited to watch students give a final presentation on a health topic they have learned about. Following presentations, there will be a special recognition luncheon for students and parents/guardians to close the program. All students will receive merit awards for successful completion of the program, and selected students will receive recognition for outstanding performance throughout the program.
Saturday morning? That's time for fun/rest! Why would I want to go study science?
At the UNC School of Medicine, we like to think that science and medicine are fun! Believe us, HPREP is worth getting up for. Learning with us is fun and interactive. You will be working with your fellow students and with UNC college and medical students who will be your Teaching Assistants. You will learn in-depth information about topics in medicine and science, get exposure to different careers in the health care field, get insight on how to get ready for college, and your being selected to participate in this program is an honor that you can include in your college applications!
