For 30 years, national commissions have been calling for those who
conduct research to provide treatment for subjects who may be
harmed through participation, arguing that we have an ethical
obligation to care for those who bear the risk. Many countries have
policies that require treatment or compensation for research injuries,
but only a few U.S. agencies and institutions have established selfinsurance
programs. Is it finally time for a nationalized system that
would mandate coverage for research-related injury?
