Dr. Gruppuso does molecular biological research in an NIH-funded laboratory and substantial teaching to preclinical medical students at Brown. He is also a pediatric endocrinologist. As education dean, he has overseen shortening of the preclinical curriculum for Brown medical students, the development of scholarly concentrations, and other important curriculum initiatives.
ELSI means Ethical, Legal, & Social Implications -- a framework initially applied to new genetic/genomic technologies, yet relevant to other technologies & sciences as well: nanotech, infotech, imaging tech... any tech, & any science. ELSI analyses benefit from various scholarly disciplines--including the young inter-discipline of "Science & Technology Studies," STS.
Dr. Gruppuso's visit is cosponsored by the UNC SOM Academy of Educators and by NIH R25 grants to Enhance Behavioral & Social Sciences in Medical Education. UNC & Brown belong to a consortium of 14 medical schools nationwide working with such grants.
