SPRING 2013 READING GROUP:  VITALISM  &  MECHANISM  Since  antiquity,  disputes  over  the  criteria  distinguishing  living  from  non-­‐living  matter  -­‐  as  well  as  material  and  immaterial  causal  agents  in  nature  -­‐  have  constituted  some  of  the  most  lively  episodes  in  the  history  and  philosophy  of  science.  While  the  late  20th  century  development  of  molecular  genetics  has  seemingly  ensured  the  historical  death  of  vitalistic  doctrines,  some  contemporary  scholars  and  scientists  have,  instead,  proposed  the  continued  importance  of  the  vitalism/mechanism  debate.  Over  eight  sessions  the  reading  group  will  therefore  explore  these  debates  from  a  variety  of  disciplinary  angles  to  facilitate  fruitful  dialogue  between  participants  with  diverse  scholarly  backgrounds  and  interests.  We  also  encourage  participants  to  propose  readings  and  lead  discussions  throughout  the  semester.
