ELSI researchers typically focus on issues of social significance for human beings in genetics/genomics research or in emerging clinical applications. But human subject research and patient treatment takes place against a backdrop of genetic/genomic research on non-human animals, with mice as the animal model most commonly employed. This interactive seminar will address issues arising at the intersection of mouse genetics/genomics and ELSI including: ethical and regulatory frameworks for animal moral status, societal worries about human-animal chimeras, the origins of the laboratory mouse, experimental protocol review and welfare regulations, and whether mice are good models for human disease.
