Dr. Porterfield is a physician trained in internal medicine and preventive medicine and has served as the Director of the Preventive Medicine Residency in the Department of Social Medicine since 2002. She completed both the Preventive Medicine Residency and the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program at UNC in 2000, and worked in the North Carolina Division of Public Health for 6 years in chronic disease control, from 2002-2007 working both at the NC DPH and at UNC. Currently, she has an additional role at RTI International, as a Senior Public Health Research Analyst, where she conducts research and evaluation projects in chronic disease. Her research interests are in public health systems and services research, measuring performance and quality in public health practice, and dissemination of evidence-based interventions in public health practice.
