- Tutorial groups, in which 3-4 students meet with a faculty member for one-hour sessions each week have proved to be a very effective teaching method. These teaching sessions should take absolute priority over other conferences.
- Tutorial sessions should focus on oral presentations, clinical problem solving, and pre- and post-operative care (e.g., fluids and electrolytes, shock, acid-base, wound healing). Students should have an opportunity to get answers to their questions and to discuss ethical decision-making.
- We feel this arrangement serves to provide greater continuity of the educational experience offered by the services to which the student is assigned as well as to reinforce basic concepts in the care of surgical patients.
