Sara K. Pasquali, MD, MHS, a pediatric cardiologist at the University of Michigan, will be the visiting professor and keynote speaker during the 2015 UNC Children’s Heart Collaborative Fall Symposium. She will speak at two events:

Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2015, 7:15-8:15 a.m., 4th floor Old Clinic Auditorium: Mastering the Scientific Presentation. Dr. Pasquali will give tips on creating high-impact presentations and planning a successful career in academic medicine. Breakfast will be served.

Thursday, Oct. 8, 2015, 8-9 a.m. at Pediatrics Grand Rounds, 4th floor Old Clinic Auditorium: Understanding and improving outcomes in congenital heart disease: A data-driven approach.

Both lectures are open to all interested faculty, fellows, residents and medical students.

The UNC Children’s Heart Collaborative (CHC) facilitates research across specialties such as pediatric cardiothoracic surgery, pediatric cardiology, pediatric anesthesia, radiology, pediatric critical care, pediatric endocrinology, the UNC School of Nursing, and pediatric hematology/oncology. Jennifer S. Nelson, M.D., assistant professor in the UNC Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, is director of the collaborative, which includes about 25 researchers at UNC.

Dr. Pasquali is an associate professor in the Division of Pediatric Cardiology at the University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital. She is also a faculty member at the university’s Center for Healthcare Outcomes & Policy.

She received her undergraduate degree from University of Michigan and M.D. degree from Duke University School of Medicine. Dr. Pasquali completed pediatric residency and pediatric cardiology fellowship training at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. She also has formal training in biostatistics and clinical research methods, including a Master of Health Sciences (MHS) degree from Duke, under its Clinical Research Training Program.

Dr. Pasquali’s research focuses on evaluation of outcomes and quality in children undergoing heart surgery, and her work is supported by NHLBI. She is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) Congenital Heart Surgery Database Taskforce, and directs the Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care Consortium (PC4) Data Coordinating Center.

Her research has received awards from the American Heart Association, American College of Cardiology, American Academy of Pediatrics, and Congenital Heart Surgeons Society. She was elected to the Society for Pediatric Research in 2009. She co-directs the Michigan Congenital Heart Outcomes Research and Discovery (M-CHORD) Program, and the Fellowship Research Program at the Michigan Congenital Heart Center.
