February 15, 2011 — The Department of Surgery is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Pamela A. Rowland as the first Associate Chair of Education in the department.

Dr. Rowland trained as a behavioral scientist and has more than 30 years of clinical experience working with surgeons and physicians at Dartmouth, Tufts, Brown and now at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She evaluates faculty in clinical settings and has focused her research on physician-patient satisfaction, oral examinations and interviewing skills. She is the lead author on the first book to focus on the communication & professionalism skills of surgeons, Communication & Professionalism: A Guide for Surgeons.

A nationally recognized communications expert, she is co-director of the national course, Clinical Performance & Oral Examinations in Surgery, a faculty member on the Plastic Surgery Educational Foundation’s Oral and Written Board Preparation Course, recipient of the 2004 Outstanding Teacher Award by the Association of Surgical Education and a 2009 & 2010 Pfizer Visiting Professorship in Health Literacy. She assists clinical faculty, residents and students improve their performance in a variety of clinical settings and will continue her national work on physician remediation.
