September 3, 2010 - Dr. Raj Pruthi, Urologic Surgery, is featured on a public service announcement airing on ABC News that promotes UNC Hospitals' free prostate cancer screening clinic, scheduled for Sept. 22nd and 23rd. The annual screening sessions encourage citizens to take the first step toward diagnosing prostate cancer at a treatable stage. Dr. Pruthi's public service announcement can be seen on both ABC News and YouTube.
September 2, 2010 -- I just wanted to thank ALL of the OR staff who worked so hard to make the two laser days, on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, so very successful. We did thirty (30!!!) cases --adult and children, burn and non-burn, recon and cosmetic--in the annex.

August 31, 2010 -- The UNC Health Sciences Library plans to rename its Historical Collections Reading Room as “The Benson Reid Wilcox Historical Collections Reading Room” in recognition of Dr. Benson Wilcox.
August 19, 2010 -- Dana DiPerna Pillsbury, a high school English teacher from Davidson, NC, was diagnosed with stage II breast cancer on Election Day 2004. Five years after her initial treatment, her cancer returned. She was referred to the Breast Center at the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, where her team of providers included Dr. Keith Amos (pictured at right).
August 18, 2010 -- Dr. Michael Phillips, a PGY-2 General Surgery resident, and Dr. Matt Coward, a PGY-4 Urology resident, are the Surgery recipients of the 2010 Kaiser Permanente Excellence in Teaching Award. The awards were presented at the annual Whitehead Lecture and Awards Ceremony on August 18.

July 20, 2010 -- Carrie Nielsen, Social and Clinical Research Specialist in Abdominal Transplant, was presented the Big Buddy Award at the Employee Forum Peer Recognition Award Ceremony on Tuesday, July 20th. The Big Buddy Award recognizes individuals who have taken the time to mentor a fellow employee.
July 15, 2010 -- A team of Lineberger researchers led by Dr. Jen Jen Yeh has discovered a genetic marker that can predict the aggressive nature of pancreatic cancers.

June 30, 2010 -- The Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society has named C. Scott Hultman, MD, a recipient of the 2010 Edward D. Harris Professionalsim Award. Dr. Hultman, chief of UNC's Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery division, will receive a $16,000 award to support his project, "Understanding and Achieving Professionalism in a Surgical Practice." June 21, 2010 – Dr. Jeffrey Dehmer, a general surgery resident, was awarded one of the fourteen Plus People Awards for the Summer 2010 quarter. The UNC Plus People Award is a long standing tradition which recognizes 1% of UNC Health Care employees each quarter that exemplify our Commitment to Caring within the UNC Hospitals.
June 7, 2010 -- The faculty elected three Medical Staff Executive Committee at-large members last week. Each faculty member will serve a three-year term on the MSEC. The winners of the elections are: David Henke, MD, Department of Medicine, Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine (re-elected); Eldad Hadar, MD, Department of Surgery, Division of Neurosurgery (re-elected); and Michael Meyers, MD, Department of Surgery, Division of Surgical Oncology. June 1, 2010 -- Dr. Bruce Cairns, director of the North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center, has been appointed by the American Burn Association as chair of its Research Committee. His term will run from 2010 through 2013.
June 1, 2010 -- Dr. David Gerber, chief of the Division of Abdominal Surgery, has been promoted to Professor of Surgery effective June 1, 2010.
May 27, 2010 -- Dr. Courtney Sommer, currently a third year General Surgery Resident, recently received a $5,000 grant from the Medical Alumni Endowment Grant Fund through the UNC School of Medicine's Medical Alumni Association. The aim of the Endowment Fund Grant is to fund proposals from new investigators or established investigators exploring new areas of discovery from UNC faculty or housestaff that will promote excellence in education, research or service and has a high likelihood of being sustained in the future.
May 26, 2010 -- Delegates of the Royal Society of Medicine’s Section of Surgery visited the UNC Department of Surgery from May 21st through May 26th, 2010. Their visit included a joint meeting with the Surgery Department from May 24-25. During the meeting, members of the Royal Society of Medicine and faculty members of the Department of Surgery presented on various surgical education issues.
May 20, 2010 -- Drs. David Gerber, Division of Abdominal Transplant division, and Ben Haithcock, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, have each been awarded a $10,000 grant by the NC TraCS Institute.
May 20, 2010 -- Dr. Jeff Dehmer, a PGY-3 in the general surgery residency program, has been elected President of the UNC Housestaff Council for the one-year term beginning July 1, 2010.
May 17, 2010 -- An article in UNC's Endeavors magazine, a publication about discoveries and creativity at the university, highlights the research of Dr. Thomas Egan and his collaborators.
