We are pleased to announce Dr. David Gerber as the new Vice Chair of Clinical Affairs for the Department of Surgery. Dr. Gerber currently serves as Chief of the Division of Transplant Surgery and Medical Director of UNC Healthcare Center for Transplant Care / UNC Hospitals Jason Ray Transplant Clinic. Dr. Gerber is a renowned transplant surgeon and accomplished researcher who has been engaged in basic science research focusing on stem cell biology and tissue engineering in the field of Regenerative Medicine. Dr. Gerber joined UNC in 1998 after completing his clinical transplant fellowship and was promoted to Professor in 2007. He was elected to UNC’s Faculty Council and the University’s Faculty Executive Committee that oversees faculty governance for the University of North Carolina. Beginning in 2008, he has served as the UNC Transplant Center’s United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) Representative and has been actively involved in UNOS processes including the electronic donor organ allocation system. He is former chair of the Scientific Studies Committee for the American Society of Transplant Surgeons and in 2008 was selected as a James IVth Traveling Fellow. In 2010, he was appointed by the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services to the Advisory Committee on Transplantation. He holds the rank of Colonel in the US Air Force Reserve Medical Corps and is an Adjunct Professor at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. In 2013, he received the Clinical & Academic Grand Master Special Experience Identifier Award from the Office of the Surgeon General in the USAF and in 2015 completed Air War College. He is currently an active member of the American Surgical and the Southern Surgical Associations.

Dr. Hong Jin Kim

We are pleased to announce Dr. HJ Kim as the new Vice Chair of Strategy and Outreach for the Department of Surgery. Dr. HJ Kim currently serves as Chief of Surgery Oncology and Clinical Director of the Tissue Procurement Core Facility of the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dr. Kim is an accomplished surgeon and researcher who is engaged in basic science research focusing on chemoresistance and tumor microenvironment in the field of Metabolomics. He joined UNC in 2001 and was promoted to Professor in 2013. He has received multiple UNC Health Care and departmental awards for his clinical leadership and teaching excellence. Since 2008, he has served as the Program Director for the Fellowship in Surgical Oncology and has continuously been the Service Leader for the Division starting in 2009. Dr. Kim served as a member of the planning committee to develop a Survivorship Cohort with the UNC School of Public Health, and a Cancer Genetics/Genomics Program through the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. He was also the surgical oncology representative on the Cancer Strategic Planning Advisory Group created to develop a long-range strategic plan for the UNC Healthcare System as it relates to cancer care delivery across the state of North Carolina. Nationally, he has been involved in the Program and Training Committees of the Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO), as well as the Executive Council and Leadership Committee of the Association for Academic Surgery (AAS). He was on the Publications and Program Committee of the Society of University Surgeons and is currently an active member of the American Surgical and the Southern Surgical Associations
