In February 2011, Dr. Clara N. Lee traveled to Lilongwe, Malawi as a part of the UNC Project. The project, which is based in Kamuzu Central Hospital, is a collaboration between UNC-CH and the Malawi Ministry of Health. Its mission: "to identify innovative, culturally acceptable, and affordable methods to improve the health of the people of Malawi, through research, health systems strengthening, prevention, training, and care."
During her time there, Dr. Lee mentored Jared Tomlinson, a postdoc and general surgery resident at the University of Rochester. Tomlinson, a 2010-2011 Fogarty Scholar, focused his research on lower extremity trauma: incidence, treatment and impact in the third world.
In addition, Dr. Lee performed reconstructive procedures on local citizens while training local surgical residents and clinical officers. She also helped with a workshop on scientific writing.
