Dr. Dore selected to present his research at the 2014 American College of Rheumatology Research Workshop
Dr. Dore was selected to present his research study “The Relationship between Lower Limb Osteoarthritis Burden and Risk for Falls: The Johnston County Osteoarthritis Project” at the 2014 American College of Rheumatology Research Workshop in Seattle, Washington in June. This course is a two- day workshop designed to promote interactions between young and established investigators to foster collaboration and career mentoring.

Matthew J. Billard, PhD receives public policy fellowship from AAI
On May 1, The American Association of Immunologists (AAI) launched the fourth year of its Public Policy Fellows Program (PPFP), a program designed to engage postdoctoral fellows and junior scientists in public policy activities that impact biomedical research. Following careful review of the applications received, the AAI Committee on Public Affairs named the following ten individuals as the 2014-2015 AAI Public Policy Fellows.

The Chronic Osteoarthritis Management Initiative (COAMI)
Dr. Joanne Jordan, COAMI Chair, worked with colleagues to prepare the U.S.Bone and Joint Initiative (USBJI)/COAMI annotated bibliography of guidelines and recommendations on the management of OA. An extensive literature review and rigorous screening process yielded several areas where current recommendations and guidelines offer general consensus: education and self-management, exercise and weight loss, use of assistive devices, alternative/complementary approaches, surgical interventions, and pharmacologic interventions.

A special Osteoarthritis and Cartilage issue on pain in osteoarthritis
The September 2013 special issue of OAC on Pain in Osteoarthritis has come out. This issue incorporates articles from basic science, pre-clinical animal models, to clinical OA, clinical trials, and policy. It was guest-edited by our own Dr. Joanne Jordan, and Richard Gracely, PhD in the UNC School of Dentistry.

Dr. Leigh Callahan and team awarded an R21 grant by the NIH, National Cancer Institute
This new funding will enable the team to explore how an evidence-based physical activity (PA) program – the Arthritis Foundation’s Walk With Ease program – can be adapted for breast cancer survivors on aromatase inhibitors therapy (AI) therapy to: (1) help them maintain or achieve recommended levels of physical activity, (2) reduce their joint pain/stiffness/achiness, and (3) thereby enable to them to remain on AI therapy as prescribed. Co-Investigators for this study are Christine Rini, PhD, Associate Professor of Health Behavior and a member of the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center (LCCC) and Hyman B. Muss, MD, Director of Geriatric Oncology at the LCCC and breast cancer oncologist at the North Carolina Cancer Hospital. This study represents an important inter-disciplinary research initiative between rheumatology and oncology.
