|As many of you probably know, I am the founding member of the Division of Rheumatology, Allergy and Immunology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC). The Division was started in 1970 and today it continues to grow and thrive, making valuable contributions in Arthritis and Allergy under the direction of Dr. Joanne Jordan. I continue to consult, care for patients and teach as a full time faculty member. I am blessed with good health and still enjoy a career which is not only fulfilling personally but also gives me the opportunity to provide guidance to young people at different stages in the medical educational process.
In 2006, the UNC School of Medicine selected me as the first Reeves Distinguished Professor in Medicine and Arthritis Research. This cherished award has meant a great deal to me. It provides part of my salary, pays for professional development and assists with travel expenses to national meetings. Additionally, it covers a variety of other expenses that contribute to a more complete and professional medical and teaching environment.
A major goal at this point in my life is to establish a Distinguished Professorship which will bear my name and offer support to a faculty member who shares my sense of commitment and dedication to research, teaching and patient care. To date, one large commitment and a number of smaller gifts have been made to the professorship. My wife, Betty, and I plan to make a gift to the effort via bequest. We felt it would be improper to request others' support for a Professorship without first making a financial commitment ourselves.
We would love for you to join with us and make a contribution to help change the life of a deserving faculty member which in turn changes the lives of patients. Betty and I feel this is a very attainable goal which would honor not only my contributions to Medicine and UNC but would also honor those I have worked with, taught and interacted with over the 40 plus years I have devoted to research, teaching and clinical practice.
I recognize that you have the opportunity to contribute to numerous worthwhile organizations and causes. However, I believe strongly in this endeavor and can envision the lives of many patients being made better because of our collective efforts.
