Thurston Visitor - Owain Donnelly

Owain Donnelly is currently visiting our center from London. I am a final year medical student at University College London (UCL). I am from a small town in North Wales originally, and it is (mildly) famous in the UK for supposedly having the third longest name in the world: Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch!

Prior to my time at UCL, I spent a few years at Leicester Medical School, and then moved to London to complete a BSc in Global Health. In our final year, we are allowed to spend 6 weeks studying medicine abroad, and I was lucky enough to be allowed to come and do a Rheumatology placement at UNC. I have been interested in Rheumatology, especially Lupus, since my placement two years ago at University College Hospital with Professor David Isenberg. He was kind enough to put me in touch with Dr. Mary Anne Dooley, who has been very enthusiastic throughout about my coming to UNC. Through blind chance, my elective period coincided with the annual ACR meeting in San Diego, so I spent my first week in the USA there! That was certainly a fantastic experience, and I learned a great deal about a number of diseases (some of which I'd never even heard of before, such as Tnf Receptor Associated Periodic Syndrome!). The entire Rheumatology team has made me feel very welcome here, and I look forward to learning more during my remaining time here in Chapel Hill!
