Musculoskeletal Ultrasound

Ultrasound provides a dynamic point of care assessment of the musculoskeletal system, including bones, joints, tendons, muscles, and supporting structures in normal and pathologic states.  Ultrasound is also useful for real-time procedural guidance in the clinic.  Dr. Nelson and a rotating fellow staff a half-day ultrasound clinic at Carolina Pointe II. Multiple Joint Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis often affects more than one joint, but the overall “burden” of OA in multiple joints on an individual has been understudied.  Dr. Nelson’s work explores gender and racial differences in multiple joint OA as well as the impact of OA in multiple joints on function and disability.  [More]

Hip Shape and Hip OA

Hip dysplasia, and more recently femoroacetabular impingement, are alterations in the shape of the components of the hip joint that likely predispose to early osteoarthritis of the hip.  Dr. Nelson’s career development grant explores these issues in the Johnston County Osteoarthritis Project cohort.  [More]
