Biomarkers

Biomarkers of environmental exposure and effect represent an additional core strength of research for faculty and trainees in the Curriculum.

Professor Swenberg has developed a state-of-the-art mass spectrometry laboratory that is devoted to biomarker research. This laboratory is within the Center for Environmental Health and Susceptibility and is supported by the Superfund Basic Research Program, and instrumentation grants from the NIH and the North Carolina Biotechnology Center. The ultra-trace analysis available with instruments in this facility permits a wide range of biomarker studies that includes DNA and protein adduct analyses for studies of DNA damage and repair, oxidative stress, human and animal biomonitoring of xenobiotic exposure and metabolism, dietary exposures, evaluation of life-stage and gender differences, and improvement of biologically-based risk assessment.
