Curriculum in Genetics and Molecular Biology (GMB)

GM&B Logo

The Curriculum in Genetics and Molecular Biology (GMB) is an interdepartmental graduate program that trains students to be creative, sophisticated research scientists prepared to pursue careers in academic, government, or commercial positions. To learn more, visit the CGMB website.

Prospective graduate students interested in participating in GMB can find application information here.

Bioinformatics and Computational Biology Training Program (BCB)

BCB Logo

Modern biology, in this post-genome age, is being greatly enriched by an infusion of ideas from a variety of computational fields, including computer science, information science, mathematics, operations research and statistics. In turn, biological problems are motivating innovations in these computational sciences. There is a high demand for scientists who can bridge these disciplines. The goal of the BCB Training Program is to train such scientists through a rigorous and balanced curriculum that transcends traditional departmental boundaries. The Program offers specialized training toward certification in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology that complement and enhance the normal degree requirements of the students’ home departments. Visit the BCB Training Program website for more information.

Developmental Biology Training Program

Developmental Biology Training Program Logo

UNC Chapel Hill has a long history of excellence in developmental biology. The Developmental Biology Training Program is designed for both pre- and post-doctoral trainees in participating laboratories across UNC. The Program encourages faculty to provide scientific guidance and mentorship in their trainees’ scientific careers. In addition to academic requirements, trainees will also participate in a variety of extracurricular activities, such as a journal club and an annual research symposium. These activities will allow trainees to learn about other relevant research and provide them with opportunities to present their own work to the developmental biology community at UNC. View the Developmental Biology Training Program website for more information.

Medical Genetics Training Programs

Medical Genetics Residency Logo

Medical Genetics Residency Program. The Department of Genetics offers a two-year Medical Genetics Residency program to prepare physicians for Board Certification in Medical Genetics. The program is designed to prepare physicians to be independent clinical geneticists, proficient in providing comprehensive medical genetics services, capable of initiating and collaborating in basic and applied research activities, and effective in teaching and communicating their expertise to others. These goals are achieved through in-depth clinical experience with adult and pediatric patients with cytogenetic, biochemical, single-gene and complex multifactorial genetic conditions.  Click here for more information.

Clinical Molecular Genetics Postdoctoral Program. The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine offers a two-year Clinical Molecular Genetics Fellowship program, which is an accredited, two-year postdoctoral training program that leads to eligibility for certification by the American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG). Upon successful completion of the fellowship and ABMG certification, the trainee will be qualified to direct a clinical molecular genetics laboratory.Click here for more information.

Clinical Cytogenetics Postdoctoral Program. The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine offers an accredited, two-year postdoctoral training program that leads to eligibility for certification by the American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG). Upon successful completion of the fellowship and ABMG certification, the trainee will be qualified to direct a clinical cytogenetics laboratory. Click here for more information.

Genetic Counseling Master's Degree. The UNC Division of Pediatric Genetics and Metabolism is affiliated with the MS Genetic Counseling Program at UNC Greensboro (UNCG) and provides Clinical Internships for students enrolled in this program. Click here for more information.
