Endourology Fellowship

UNC Urology will not be participating in the Endourological Society match in July 2012 for fellowship beginning July 2013.

Fellowship Program Structure

The fellowship program in endourology is intended to train individuals who have completed urology residency for specialized careers in Urology.  The goals of this fellowship are to provide an individual with more specialized training and research in the areas of laparoscopy, robotics, and endourology.  The individual will see patients in a clinical setting and have a dedicated operating schedule.  While most of the training will revolve around lapraoscopy and endourology, some additional general urology will be included.  The fellow will work under the direct supervision of the Director of Laparoscopic Surgery.  This is an Endourologic Society approved two-year fellowship program.  For more information please visit their website at http://www.endourology.org/.

One year fellowship with certificate of advanced clinical training may also be available.

Fellowship Program Goals

• Committed to a career in Urology
• Advanced urological practice and residency training
• Complete research projects for peer-reviewed journals and at national meetings
• Training in endourology, including endoscopic management of stones, strictures, and urothelial cancers
• Training in oncologic laparoscopy and robotic surgery, including prostatectomy, cystectomy, radical and partial nephrectomy
• Training in minimally invasive surgery for benign urologic reconstructive conditions, including ureteral reimplant, uretero-ureterostomy, and pyeloplasty
• Resident and medical student education
• Clinical research in areas of minimally invasive surgery, endourology, and outcomes.

Conferences

Fellows will participate in conferences and seminars conducted within the University of North Carolina.  They include weekly conferences in Urology, Uroradiology, Uropathology, Urology Grand Rounds, and Journal Club.  Weekly participation in Multidisciplinary Conference.  Fellows will also participate in the Urinary Course taught each December to 2nd year medical students and the annual Landes Symposium each June.

Eligibility Requirements

The applicant for this training program must

• Be committed to a career in Urology
• Provide evidence of excellence in academic urology and other endeavors
• Have completed an ACGME accredited Urology residency program
• Be a United States citizen or Visa eligible

Description of Core Program

The Laparoscopic/Endourology Fellowship at the University of North Carolina is a two-year training program consisting of designated clinics and operating room time.  The goal of the fellowship is to produce urologists that are leaders in the field of urologic laparoscopy and endourology.

The clinical training ensures that you will be proficient in all aspects of laparoscopy and endourology including:

• Robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy
• Laparoscopic radical and partial nephrectomy
• Laparoscopic cystectomy
• Robotic-assisted laparoscopic pyeloplasty
• Endourology and percutaneous surgery
• Open radical surgery for urologic malignancies
