Urologic Oncology Fellowship

Fellowship Program Structure

We are pleased to announce the establishment of a new 2-year fellowship program intended to train individuals who have completed urology residency for specialized careers in academic urologic oncology.  This opportunity will offer a multidisciplinary exposure to Urologic Oncology at the NCI-designated University of North Carolina Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, integrated with exceptional opportunities for career development in clinical outcomes and translational research, providing a foundation for a successful career in academic Urologic Oncology.

In terms of the clinical aspects of the program, we are currently expanding from 3 to 4 full-time urologic oncologists, and will add a 5th in 2012.  The urologic oncology service is clinically busy, with an average of 60 cancer cases/month (75% using robotic and minimally invasive techniques).  In addition, the fellow will participate in the fully integrated Multidisciplinary GU Oncology Clinic, which saw over 1000 new cancer patients in 2009-10.  The fellow would spend 12 months on the clinical service.

The University of North Carolina offers extraordinary opportunities for career development in both clinical/health services and translational research.  Formal postgraduate training in biostatistics, research methods, and grant writing are available in a well-developed infrastructure for young clinician-researchers.  Individuals interested in pursuing a Master's Degree from the internationally recognized Gillings School of Public Health could do so with the addition of a 3rd year.  The fellow would have access to a variety of institutional, state-level and nationally representative databases for clinical research.

Conferences

Fellows will participate in conferences and seminars conducted within the University of North Carolina.  They include weekly conferences in Urology and Journal Club.  Weekly participation in Multidisciplinary Conference.  Fellows will also participate in the Urinary course taught each December to 2nd year medical students and the annual Landes Symposium each June.
