On September 10th, Doximity physician network, in collaboration with US News & World Report, announced their first-ever national evaluation of residency programs across 20 specialties. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Urology Residency Program was ranked among the top 20 Urology residency programs nationwide. Doximity conducted an online survey of member physicians, with a request to members to nominate up to five residency programs in their medical specialty that offer the best clinical training.

Dr. Raj Pruthi, Professor and inaugural Chairman of the Department of Urology says,

“We are honored to have our fellow urologists rank us in this elite group. We believe this is a reflection of both the longstanding tradition of excellence at UNC Urology, but also the unprecedented growth, expansion, and activity of our group in recent years.”

In the past five years, UNC Urology has grown from a division within the UNC Department of Surgery with five full-time faculty members to an independent Department in the UNC School of Medicine with 16 urology physician faculty, 3 urology advanced practice professionals, and 13 adjunct faculty physicians from nephrology, radiology, medical oncology and radiation oncology.

Coinciding with this period of expansion in the faculty, the residency program was approved to expand to three residents per year in 2011.

“In addition to the superb clinical training experience offered at the Chapel Hill campus, our trainees have the additional advantage of rotations at the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte and WakeMed in Raleigh, bringing our effective faculty size to more than 30 experienced urologists,” says Eric Wallen, MD, UNC Urology Residency Program Director. Wallen adds, “These unique collaborations not only expand the number of Urology mentors for our residents but also provide invaluable exposure to a wide spectrum of practice settings.”

UNC Urology has the most providers of any program in the state selected by their peers to be listed among the Best Doctors® in Urology. In addition to the strong commitment to resident education in the program locally, the UNC Urology faculty are actively engaged on the national scene with a variety of significant educational, research and leadership positions.
