Culley C. Carson III is the Rhodes Distinguished Professor in the UNC Department of Urology. He received his medical degree from the George Washington University School of Medicine. He then completed two years of residency in general surgery at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Hanover, NH before serving as a flight surgeon in the United States Air Force for two years.  After serving in the Air Force, Dr. Carson completed his urology residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.  Following residency at the Mayo Clinic, he joined the faculty at Duke University Medical Center, advancing from Assistant Professor to Professor of Urology. Dr. Carson served as Chief of the UNC Division of Urology from 1993 to 2010.

Dr. Carson specializes in the area of Men's Health, including the treatment of Peyronie's Disease and Erectile Dysfunction. His research is also focused in the area of Men’s Health, including Erectile Dysfunction, Peyronie’s Disease, and penile prostheses. He has published more than two hundred peer review publications and edited several textbooks.

Dr. Carson currently serves in a number of national and international professional capacities, including as President of the American Society for Men's Health and Congress President for the International Society of Men’s Health. He previously served as President of the Sexual Medicine Society of North America and President of the Southeastern Section of the American Urological Association. Dr. Carson serves on many editorial boards, including BJU International and Postgraduate Medicine. He is currently Editor-in-Chief of Sexual Medicine Reviews and Associate Editor for the Journal of Men’s Health and the Trends in Urology and Men’s Health journal.  

In 2014 Dr. Carson received the Council of the British Association of Urological Surgeons' St. Paul's Medal. He also received the American Urological Association's Brantley Scott Award in 2012 and their Distinguished Contributor Award in 2011. Dr. Carson has also been consistently recognized by his peers as among the Best Doctors in America in Urology.
