Ian Udell, MD

PGY4 Resident

Ian was born in the small mountain town of McCall, Idaho.  Subsequently, his family moved to an even smaller mountain town, Swan Lake, Montana, where he grew up snowboarding and wakeboarding. He graduated from the University of Arizona with a B.S. in Molecular and Cellular Biology, and minors in Chemistry and Business. After college, he continued as a professional wakeboarder and owner of one of the premier watersports instructional facilities in the northwest. In addition, he spent two years in Houston, Texas taking care of a family member and performing liver transplant research at Baylor College of Medicine. He then attended medical school at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio.  During residency, one of his projects evaluating the cost of surveillance for low grade bladder cancer won the best poster award for its session at the AUA meeting in 2012. He was awarded the Owen H. Wangensteen Forum on Fundamental Surgical Problems: Resident/Fellow Excellence in Research Award at the American College of Surgeons meeting, also in 2012. Outside of the hospital, he enjoys spending time with his wife Erika, wakeboarding, snowboarding, playing guitar (poorly), laughing, and spending time with their dog Lucy.

Dr. Udell was also featured in UNC Health Care's Real Doctors, Real People series. Check out this video for a glimpse into his world.
