School of Medicine Web Redesign Project

About the Project

At the end of 2007, UNC School of Medicine and UNC Health Care launched new web sites with a coordinated look and feel.  The purpose of this project was to provide a common and branded identity throughout the sites, focusing on providing information to external audiences (for the School of Medicine, this includes prospective students, faculty, clinicians, researchers, and professional peers).

New Web Site Advantages

  • Content Management System: Cutting Edge Technology
Departments, divisions, programs, centers, labs, and student groups have the opportunity to take advantage of front-line technology offered by our customized Content Management System (CMS).  The CMS enables individuals to easily update web content through a web browser, and at the same time utilize dynamic calendars, news/event publishing, and search tools.  For more information about various components, take a look at ‘Features’.

  • Professional design for the School and your organization
Our talented designers have worked hard to ensure competitiveness with the web sites of other academic medical institutions.  The Office of Information Systems (OIS) will help you set up your site in the system and provide you with a customized homepage graphic to aid continuing a professional look and feel.

  • Opportunities to establish your own identity
Although a consistent look and feel between sites is a goal, we recognize the importance for organizations to maintain their own identities.  This system enables the customization of various design components. See our departmental design prototype for more information!

  • W3C and ADA 508 Compliant
Ever wondered how to make your site more accessible to all users? Whether the user has a visual disability and/or a slow internet speed connection, we believe it’s important that everyone have equal access to the information throughout our site.  To that end, we're striving to create an accessible site that is ADA 508 compliant and meets W3C Priority 1 requirements.

How to Participate!

Sites within the content management system are available to ALL School of Medicine organizations, including: departments, divisions, programs, centers, student organizations, and labs.  You do not need to wait for OIS to contact you. If you are ready to get started, please contact OIS to register for an introduction and training. At the introductory session we'll help you assess your needs for a new site and then start the process of having it created.  In a second, hands-on training session, you'll learn how to add content yourself and build your site. Each session is an hour long.
