Portlet Types

Many portlet types are available for use in the content well.

  • "Events"
  • "News"
  • "Recent items"
  • "Review list"
  • "Search portlet"
  • "Classic portlet"

They lack the enhanced features contained in the portlets explained below.

Calendar Portlet

portletCalendar_fixed.pngThe calendar portlet shows the current month with the ability to navigate between months using the next/previous month arrows. This looks and functions like the fixed right-column version. The current day is highlighted with an orange border.  Days containing events are links to a list of events for that day.  Only events in the published state will appear in the calendar portlet.

portletCarousel.pngCarousel Portlet

Carousels can now be inserted as content well portlets! They display collections of content as a contained slideshow. Settings:

  • In the Portlet header field, enter a title for your new portlet.
  • Under Target collection, your available collections should now appear in a 'Search results' box.  Select the collection that you want to appear as a portlet, and save your changes.
  • You can also Limit how many items that will be shown in the portlet.
  • Checking the Show more... link box at the bottom of the Collection portlet will create a link to the complete list of the Collection items.
  • Checking Show dates... allows you to display the publishing date of each item.
  • Omit portlet border must be checked.
  • Hide controls allows you to take away the navigation arrows and radio buttons.
  • Timer allows you to customize the speed at which the slides are cycled.

Icon IdeaTip: Don't see any collections in the menu?  Make sure you've added a collection.

Collection Portlet (Content Well)

portletCollection_content_well.jpgThe content well collection portlet differs from that ordinary collection portlet below, in that it shows titles, descriptions, as well as photos (when a collection captures News Items).  A collection must be created before adding the portlet to your site.  The following portlet options are available:

  • In the Portlet header field, enter a title for your new portlet.
  • Under Target collection, your available collections should now appear in a 'Search results' box.  Select the collection that you want to appear as a portlet, and save your changes.
  • You can also Limit how many items that will be shown in the portlet.
  • Checking the Show more... link box at the bottom of the Collection portlet will create a link to the complete list of the Collection items.
  • Checking Show dates... allows you to display the publishing date of each item.

Icon IdeaTip: Don't see any collections in the menu?  Make sure you've added a collection.

Collection Portlet

The ordinary collection portlet only lists the titles of items in a collection (which must be created before adding the portlet to your site.)  When you do create the collection portlet, the following options are available:

  • In the Portlet header field, enter a title for your new portlet.
  • Under Target collection, your available collections should now appear in a 'Search results' box.  Select the collection that you want to appear as a portlet, and save your changes.
    Note: the left and right columns have a fixed width, so tables, image and links should not exceed 150 pixels.
  • You can also set how many items that will be shown in the portlet. Similar to the News and Events portlets, checking the Show more... link box at the bottom of the Collection portlet will create a link to the complete list of the Collection items.

Lineage Events Portlet

portletEvents_fixed.pngThe Lineage events portlet shows imminent upcoming events that are in the published state.  It's called a "Lineage" portlet because it allows you to choose whether to include or exclude items that exist on child sub-sites! Remember, only events in the published state, that will occur in the future, will appear here.  This portlet should be enabled by default on your site; but if it somehow gets deleted, you can always add it back. You'll need make these settings:

  • Add a title allows you to specify your own portlet title.
  • In the Number of items to display field, enter the number of events you wish this portlet to display.
  • Leave the Workflow state field set to Published.
  • Check the Exclude subsites box, if you don't want subsites' events to appear in your events portlet.

Lineage News Portlet

portletNews_fixed.pngThe Lineage news portlet shows the most recent news items that are in published state. All news items displayed on the news portlet must be added to the 'News' folder, located at the root of your site. The Lineage news portlet is enabled by default on your site; but if it somehow gets deleted, you can always add it back.  You'll need make these settings:

  • Add a title allows you to specify your own portlet title.
  • In the Number of items to display field, enter the number of news items you wish this portlet to display.
  • Leave the Workflow state field set to Published.
  • Check the Exclude subsites box, if you don't want subsites' news to appear in your news portlet.

Lineage Recent Portlet

portletRecent_content_well.pngThe Lineage Recent portlet displays recent site changes to those who're logged in.

  • In the Number of items to display field, enter the number of recent items you wish this portlet to display.
  • Check the Exclude subsites box, if you don't want subsites' recent items to appear in your recent portlet.

Lineage Review Portlet

portletReviewList.pngThis portlet is only visible for logged-in users with 'Reviewer' permission or higher on your site.  The Lineage review portlet displays items which have been submitted for publication by users who do not have publishing permission.  Until a reviewer (or higher) publishes those items, nothing in the review portlet will be visible on your site.  This portlet is useful for the site manager, since it collects and displays a list of all content awaiting approval.

  • Check the Exclude subsites box, if you don't want subsites' recent items to appear in your review portlet.

Lineage Search Portlet

portletSearch_fixed.pngThe Lineage search portlet is a way to search only within your site.  This differs from the 'Search Site' search box in the main School of Medicine banner, as that box searches all School of Medicine and UNC Health Care websites.  The SOM search portlet is especially useful if you have a large site and think users will need to search for specific content items. When you add it:

  • Leave the Enable LiveSearch box checked, if you'd like new content items to be added to search results as they are created.
  • In the Add a title field, enter a title to display above your search portlet.
  • Leave the Exclude subsites box checked, if you don't want subsites' search results to appear in your search portlet.

Login Portlet

There are some instances where site login should be more prominent—perhaps when users need easy access an intranet folder. The Login portlet works just like the usual site login, and functions as a shortcut.

  • If a user forgets their password, the "Forgot your password" link directs them to main campus for ONYEN password help.

RSS Feed Portlet

RSS (Rich Site Summary) is a technology for communicating dynamically-updated web content listings.  RSS feeds are basically lists of news headlines that update automatically. Many news sites, blogs and other online publishers syndicate stories using these RSS feeds, which you'll need in order to publish feed portlets on your site. You can find a feed URL (i.e. http://news.unchealthcare.org/news/aggregator/RSS) on any site that provides it by looking for an RSS Icon RSS icon, or you can search for feeds using a service like Google Reader or Feedage.com. RSS feed portlet settings include:

  • In the Title field, enter the title you'd like the portlet to display.  You may leave this blank, if you the RSS feed already has a title you like.
  • In the Number of items to display field, enter the number of events you wish this portlet to display.
  • In the URL of RSS feed field, enter the URL of the RSS feed you'd like to add (sometimes this will end with .XML, but not always).
  • Leave the Feed reload timeout field set to 100, unless you want the page to auto-refresh often (not recommended).

Static Text Portlet

portletStaticText_fixed.pngA static text portlet is a portlet that can contain anything you want: custom text, images, etc (just like the body of a page.)  You can make a static text portlet look like regular page content on a white background by omitting the portlet border. Settings:

  • In the Portlet header field, enter a title for your new portlet.
  • The Text area is where you will enter the content you wish to highlight. The Text section allows you to easily edit and style your content using the web system's visual editor. You can use the buttons and tools that appear to add basic formatting to your text. Keep max width guidelines in mind (see Related Content).
  • Icon Idea Tip: You can make a static text portlet look like regular page content on a white background by checking Omit Portlet Border! To keep the portlet border and background, keep Omit Portlet Border unchecked.
  • If you check the Hide Portlet checkbox, or the portlet will not appear on your site.

Flash Movie Portlet

Flash movie portlets are made to display .SWF animation files on your site.  Keep max width guidelines in mind (see Related Content).  Note that you must first upload the SWF file to your site, in order to create a Flash movie portlet. When you add it:

  • Select your Flash movie from the Flash Movie drop-down menu.

Icon IdeaTip: Don't see any Flash movies in the menu?  Make sure you've uploaded your SWF as a 'Flash movie' and not 'File'.
