Are selective evaluations required?
Course evaluations for selectives must be completed within five days after the subtest or the completion of the clerkship.
When are selective evaluations conducted?
Student evaluations of selectives are distributed according to a schedule. Selectives are evaluated at their completion. Since selectives are scheduled using a period system, they are evaluated by periods. With evaluations being conducted at the end of each period for each selective. The schedule takes breaks, vacations, and even weekends into consideration. These adjustments to the schedule are made to maximize students' opportunity to respond to the course evaluation. The general schedule is as follows:
| Activity | When? |
| Selective evaluation sent | 4 days prior to end date of selective |
| First reminder sent (to students who have not yet responded) | last day of selective |
| Second reminder sent (to students who still have not responded) | 2 days after the selective ends |
| Nonrespondents reported | 5 days after selective ends |
| Evaluation closed | end of fall and spring semester |
Do all selectives use the same evaluation instrument?
While all selective evaluation forms are based on the same core questions, the forms do take into account the different formats of the selectives. Thus, each of the selective evaluations may vary slightly.
What questions are asked on the selective evaluation form?
The form covers many aspects of the selective as related to its stated learning objectives. It attempts to address instructional methods rather than individual instructors. See what the form looks like for each of the following selectives:
Why are reminders sent?
The product used for course evaluation has a reminder feature. Although we would prefer not to remind, we have found that response rates are significantly improved when this feature is used. Once a student submits a response, the student is no longer sent reminders. The electronic survey program determines who should receive reminders based on its database of respondents.
What happens when a student does not respond to a selective evaluation?
At the completion of each evaluation cycle, after all reminders have been sent, a list of students who have not responded is sent to the selective coordinator. Each selective decides independently what to do about students who have not responded to the selective evaluation. Students are permitted to submit evaluations up until the time the reports are run.
When are the results of the selective evaluations reported?
Results of selective evaluations are reported mid-year and at the completion of the academic year. At the completion of the academic year, the spring semester results are reported along with a separate report that covers all selective periods for the academic year.
Are the elective courses evaluated?
Due the variety of elective courses, they are evaluated via a scannable paper form. A sample of the form is provided for your information; scannable forms are only available through the Office of Educational Development.
