ANES 401 Acting Internship in Anesthesiology

01 - Acting Internship in Anesthesiology (6)
The primary objective of the Acting Internship is to provide insight and training in the principles of anesthesia and intraoperative care. Experience will include:

1. Pre-and postoperative evaluation of patients, with direct patient responsibility.
2. Care of the anesthetized patient.
3. Clinical pharmacology and physiology of the perioperative period.
4. The principles and practice of both regional and inhalational anesthetic techniques including intravenous therapy, the principles of the intravenous administration of drugs, airway management and endotracheal intubation, cardiovascular monitoring, and the care of critically ill patients during the operative period.
5. Diagnosis and treatment of chronic pain problems.
6. Further training in the principles of cardovascular support.
Learning Activities: Preoperative assessments and procedures such as intubations, mask ventilation, intravenous catheters. They will also interview patients. Students will set up an anesthetic care and ventilator. Participate in conferences and interact with residents, attendings, and nurses.
Evaluation: Students will be observed and evaluated by attendings and residents as they perform pre-operative assessments and procedures such as intubations, mask ventilation, intravenous catheters. They will also be evaluated on their ability to interview patients, set up an anesthetic car and ventilator. Participation in conferences and interactions with residents, attendings, and nurses will be assessed.

Clinical research in Obstetric Anesthesia (Drs. D. Mayer and F. Spielman)
Clinical research in Pediatric Anesthesia (Drs. A. Bailey and R. Valley)
Clinical research in Regional Anesthesia (Dr. R. Coombs)
Clinical research in Cardiac Anesthesia (Dr. M. Stella)
Basic Science research in Cardiac Neuropharmacology & Cardioprotection (Drs. R. Mueller and X. Zu)
Patient Safety Research (Drs. J. Berman, P. Boysen, K. Fecho)
Learning Activities: Individualized activities based on research project.
Evaluation: Evaluations will be completed by the faculty member supervising the research. Students will be graded on their research plan, accuracy and efficiency of data collection/entry, overall understanding of their research project (including background literature), and interactions with nurses, technicians, and patients.
