DERM 401 Dermatology

Learning Objectives: 1) Identify common dermatologic disorders
2) Develop an effective diagnostic approach to skin lesions
3) Learn skin biopsy, potassium hydroxide, Tzanck smear, and scabies preparation techniques
4) Demonstrate perseverance in care of patients (II)
5) Collaborate with other health care professionals (team members) (III5, V5, V1)
6) Interact with patients appropriately (III)
7) Exhibit advanced evaluation and communication skills in patient care.

Learning Activities: 1) Hours: 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
2) Activities:
a) Consult Service: 1 week
b) Clinics 3 weeks: Most clinics are located at the Ambulatory Care Center.
c) Conferences: Every Wednesday and Thursday mornings
d) No night or weekend call activities
Evaluation: 1) Patient evaluation and presentations during consult week.
2) Assistance of consult resident during consult week.
3) End of rotation slide examination.
Special Notes: During blocks 0-2, 3 slots per month will be reserved for 4th year UNC School of Medicine students and students with Dermatology as a career goal. Visiting students scheduled in periods 1-4 only by approval of the course director.

DERM 402 Research in Dermatology

Prerequisites: By permission only. Student must contact the course director two months prior to registering for the elective (919-843-7092).

Learning Objectives: This elective is designed for the student at any level who desires to spend a minimum of two months full-time in one of the Dermatology Research Laboratories. Depending upon the desires of the student and the preceptor, an opportunity would be available to become acquainted with basic methods in keratinocyte cell biology, tissue culture, , immunology, molecular biology, and protein chemistry. Interested students should contact the course director at least two months prior to the anticipated starting date.
Learning Activities: Learning will occur through active participation in 1) student or investigator initiated research projects and 2) departmental research seminars. Students are encouraged to become familiar with the basic science literature relevant to their individual projects.
Evaluation: Students are evaluated based upon their day-to-day effort and performance. Students will have the opportunity to present their work at the departmental research seminar.

Learning Objectives: To see and be able to diagnose the common skin disorders that present in a dermatology practice and to be exposed to some of the more uncommon disorders and understand the aspects. If you have declared Dermatology as a career goal, you are strongly encouraged to take DERM 401 for generation of letters of recoomendation.
Learning Activities: The student will be under the direct supervision of practicing dermatologists in their offices who see a wide variety of skin problems. Clinical faculty and practitioners in dermatology in the community, under the direction of Dr. Harrison Turner, III. Composition (per week): Conference: 6 hours, Clinic: 25 hours, Library: 6 hours, Reading: 6 hours, Lecture: 2 hours.
Evaluation: There will be a one-on-one evaluation of each encounter with the dermatologist. In addition, there will be a written evaluation with the main attending for the month and verbal feedback throughout the month.
